Some days on the water are enjoyable. Others become unforgettable.

This adventure took place at Boca Grande Sandbar, one of Southwest Florida’s most popular boating destinations. Located between Boca Grande Pass and Gasparilla Sound, the sandbar is known for its shallow turquoise waters, beautiful scenery, and abundant marine life.

A Perfect Day on the Water

The day began with a relaxing boat trip to Boca Grande Sandbar.

After anchoring in the clear water, I spent time swimming, enjoying the Gulf Coast sunshine, and exploring the area before taking my e-foil out for a ride.

For nearly an hour, I cruised across the calm waters of Gasparilla Sound. The conditions were excellent, with light winds, warm temperatures, and outstanding visibility.

It was one of those Southwest Florida days that reminds you why so many people love being on the water.

An Unexpected Visitor

Eventually, I decided to take a break and return to the boat.

As I approached, I noticed something familiar.

My Gasparilla Sound friend was approaching.

I had not seen this dolphin for more than a week. During my e-foil ride, there was no sign of him. Yet somehow, as I returned to the boat, he appeared once again.

Based on previous encounters, I suspected he had come to investigate the boat and perhaps play with my anchor rode.

Dolphins and Anchor Rode

Sure enough, the dolphin began swimming around the boat and interacting with the anchor line.

This was not the first time I had observed this behavior.

Dolphins are highly intelligent and curious animals. They often investigate ropes, buoys, and other objects in the water using echolocation and playful behavior.

For reasons only he knows, my Gasparilla Sound friend seemed especially interested in the anchor rode.

A Close Encounter

As I entered the water, the encounter became even more remarkable.

The dolphin repeatedly swam around me and the boat, sometimes passing within inches. I could feel the water moving around me as he surfaced, dove beneath the boat, and returned again and again.

Watching a wild dolphin interact so closely in its natural environment was a powerful reminder of how special the waters of Southwest Florida truly are.

The adventure continued with spectacular drone footage of Boca Grande Sandbar.

From above, the shallow sandbar revealed beautiful shades of emerald and turquoise water, surrounded by boats enjoying another perfect Florida afternoon.

The aerial views offered a unique perspective of one of Southwest Florida’s favorite boating destinations.

Historic Placida Trestle

Later in the day, I visited the historic Placida Railroad Trestle and former swing bridge.

Built in 1907, the Placida Trestle played an important role in the development of Boca Grande and the phosphate industry that once operated on Gasparilla Island.

Today, the remaining structure stands as one of the most recognizable historic landmarks in the area.

Interestingly, my Gasparilla Sound friend made another appearance near the historic swing bridge, creating a memorable connection between Southwest Florida’s natural beauty and its rich history.

Heading Home

As the day slowly came to an end, I cruised through Gasparilla Channel and headed back toward Placida.

The Gulf waters remained calm, and the late afternoon light created perfect boating conditions for the journey home.

It was the ideal ending to another unforgettable day on the water.

Final Thoughts

Every trip is different.

Sometimes the highlight is a beautiful sunset.

Sometimes it is discovering a hidden sandbar.

And sometimes, a dolphin returns to say hello and play with your anchor rode.

Watching Tarpon at Boca Grande Pass

One of the highlights of our trip to Cabbage Key is a stop at Boca Grande Pass, one of the deepest natural passes in Florida and one of the most famous tarpon fishing destinations in the world.

We spent about an hour drifting near the pass, watching giant tarpon rolling and “dancing” in the water. These powerful fish, often called the Silver King, attract anglers from around the globe and have helped make Boca Grande internationally famous.

While exploring the island, we also discovered displays celebrating Boca Grande’s rich fishing heritage. Historic tarpon tournament memorabilia, maritime artifacts, and stories from past generations remind visitors how closely the island’s history is connected to the waters of Boca Grande Pass.

Port Boca Grande Lighthouse (1890)

From the pass, we cruised to the southern tip of Gasparilla Island, where the historic Port Boca Grande Lighthouse stands overlooking the entrance to Charlotte Harbor.

Built in 1890, the lighthouse guided ships safely through Boca Grande Pass long before GPS and modern navigation systems existed. For more than a century, it has remained one of the most recognizable landmarks on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

After arriving, we cooled off with a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear Gulf waters before heading ashore to continue our adventure.

Exploring Gasparilla Island by Bicycle

One of the best ways to experience Boca Grande is by bicycle. After landing on the island, we hopped on bikes and explored the charming streets, historic homes, beautiful beaches, and unique atmosphere that make Gasparilla Island such a special destination.

The island itself is named after the legendary pirate José Gaspar, known locally as Gasparilla. Although historians debate whether the pirate actually existed, his legend remains deeply rooted in Southwest Florida folklore and continues to be part of the island’s identity today.

Gasparilla Island Rear Range Light (1927)

Our ride eventually brought us to the Gasparilla Island Rear Range Light, one of the most unique lighthouses in Florida.

The tower itself was originally built in Delaware in 1881 before being relocated to Gasparilla Island in 1927. It later became part of a navigation system that helped guide vessels safely through Boca Grande Pass and into Charlotte Harbor.

Today, the restored lighthouse stands as one of the most photographed landmarks in Southwest Florida. Capturing it from the air with a drone during sunset provided some of the most spectacular views of the entire trip.

Lunch at South Beach Bar & Grille

After our bike ride, we stopped for lunch at South Beach Bar & Grille, one of Boca Grande’s most popular waterfront restaurants.

Located directly on the Gulf of Mexico, the restaurant offers beautiful beachfront views, fresh seafood, and a relaxed island atmosphere. Sitting by the water while enjoying lunch was the perfect break before continuing our exploration of the island.

The panoramic Gulf views alone make this stop worth the visit.

Visiting Historic Whidden’s Marina

The original weathered buildings at Whidden’s Marina preserve the character and maritime heritage of old Florida on Gasparilla Island.

Our journey then continued through the heart of Boca Grande and eventually brought us to historic Whidden’s Marina.

Established in 1926, Whidden’s is the oldest marina on Gasparilla Island and one of the few remaining family-owned marinas in Florida. For generations, boaters, fishermen, and visitors have used this marina as a gateway to the waters of Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico.

Walking through the marina is like stepping back into old Florida, where boating traditions and island history remain alive.

The weathered wooden buildings, worn docks, and historic marina store tell stories of a different era, long before modern resorts and luxury developments transformed much of Florida’s coastline. Here, the spirit of old Boca Grande still survives. Every weathered board, faded sign, and fishing artifact seems to have a story to tell.

As we explored the marina grounds, it was easy to imagine the generations of tarpon fishermen who once prepared their boats here before heading out into Boca Grande Pass in search of the legendary Silver King. During the early days of Boca Grande’s fame, anglers from around the world traveled here to experience one of the finest tarpon fisheries on the planet, and Whidden’s Marina was often at the center of those adventures.

The historic marina store remains one of the most charming locations on the island. Its rustic appearance reflects decades of exposure to salt air, tropical storms, and Florida sunshine. Rather than replacing the old structures, the marina has preserved them, allowing visitors to experience a rare glimpse of authentic coastal Florida history.

Standing at the waterfront, looking out across the harbor, I couldn’t help but think about how much has changed over the past century. Yet Whidden’s Marina continues to serve the same purpose it has since 1926—welcoming boaters, fishermen, travelers, and explorers who come to discover the beauty of Boca Grande and Gasparilla Island.

For anyone interested in Florida’s maritime heritage, Whidden’s Marina is much more than a marina. It is a living museum, preserving the stories, traditions, and character of one of Southwest Florida’s most historic waterfront communities.

Somewhere between Pine Island Sound and Gasparilla Sound lies a peaceful hidden shoreline that I now call the Shell Beach Spot at Calusa Island.

During one of my recent boat trips exploring the waters around Bokeelia and Calusa Island, we slowly approached a long ribbon of shells stretching across shallow turquoise water. The area was quiet, remote, and accessible only by boat.

The moment felt untouched.

Mangroves surrounded the shoreline while gentle waves moved across the crystal-clear water. In some places, the shell deposits created small white beaches rising just above the tide line.

It was the perfect place to stop, walk through shallow water, and simply enjoy Southwest Florida’s natural beauty.

As we explored the shoreline, dolphins appeared nearby, and manatees were later spotted moving through the calm water around the island. Experiences like this are why I enjoy discovering hidden locations across Southwest Florida.

Exploring the Hidden Beaches and Sandbars of Bokeelia, Florida

Southwest Florida is filled with hidden waterways, remote beaches, and shallow sandbars that most visitors never get the chance to experience. During this private boat tour with five guests, we explored some of the most beautiful and lesser-known locations around Bokeelia, Florida, Pine Island Sound, and Shell Pass aboard my boat with Florida Gulf Discovery LLC.

Our adventure began at Jug Creek Marina in Bokeelia. Before heading out onto the water, we stopped for lunch at the famous Jug Creek Fish House. With blue skies overhead and calm conditions across Pine Island Sound, it felt like the perfect day for exploration.

After departing the marina, we carefully navigated through the shallow waters of Shell Pass. This region requires close attention to tides and water depth, especially for larger vessels, but the reward is access to some of the most scenic waters in Southwest Florida.

As we entered Pine Island Sound, the water shifted through incredible shades of emerald green and turquoise. The conditions were calm, and the surrounding mangrove islands created a peaceful atmosphere far removed from crowded tourist destinations.

From Shell Pass, we continued eastward toward Calusa Island. This shallow-water region is known for wildlife activity, particularly manatees that often travel through the grass flats surrounding the island. During the trip, we observed several manatees moving slowly through the shallow waters near the shoreline.

While cruising along Calusa Island, we discovered a beautiful shell-covered beach facing the inland waters near Jug Creek. The shoreline was lined with shells of every size and color, creating a natural beach unlike anything found on the mainland. Because of the shallow depth, we anchored the boat approximately 4 to 6 feet offshore and carefully walked toward the beach.

In locations like this, water shoes are absolutely essential. Many of the shells are sharp, and the bottom conditions can change quickly beneath your feet.

We spent about thirty minutes exploring the shoreline, collecting shells, taking photographs, and simply enjoying the quiet beauty of this hidden location. One of the greatest advantages of a private boat tour is the ability to slow down and truly experience places that most people pass by.

After leaving the beach, we continued toward our main destination — a remote sandbar I personally call “Bokeelia Sandbar,” though many of my returning guests know it as “Pavel’s Secret Sandbar.”

As we approached the sandbar, we spotted a family of manatees moving through the shallow water nearby. Only a few other boats were visible in the distance, making the entire area feel peaceful and untouched.

The sandbar itself is remarkable because it contains two completely different environments side by side. One area consists of soft white sand perfect for swimming and relaxing, while another section is completely covered in shells. The division between the sandy shoals and shell-covered bottom creates a unique landscape rarely seen elsewhere in Southwest Florida.

While my guests enjoyed swimming and relaxing on the sandbar, I launched my drone to capture aerial footage of the surrounding waters. From above, the patterns created by the shallow water, shell beds, and tidal channels become even more spectacular.

However, this region is exposed directly to the open winds of Pine Island Sound, meaning weather conditions can change rapidly. Anyone exploring these shallow-water environments should always pay close attention to both weather forecasts and tide schedules for safety.

We remained there for nearly two hours. By the time we prepared to leave, the incoming tide had already begun covering the sandbar beneath the water. Areas that had been fully exposed earlier in the afternoon slowly disappeared beneath the rising tide.

As we departed, we experienced one final surprise.

Several dolphins appeared beside our boat and escorted us through the shallow waters for approximately 300 feet. It was one of those rare Southwest Florida moments that cannot truly be planned. Every time I attempted to pick up my camera, the dolphins disappeared beneath the surface again, almost as if they were avoiding being filmed.

Sometimes the best moments on the water are the ones simply experienced in real life.

Exploring the hidden beaches, wildlife habitats, and remote sandbars around Bokeelia and Pine Island Sound continues to remind me why I love sharing Southwest Florida with my guests. Every trip becomes a unique adventure shaped by weather, wildlife, tides, and the beauty of the Gulf waters.

There are two cemeteries located within the grounds of Cayo Costa State Park. First, we will briefly describe them, and then we will recount the full history of the Padilla Cemetery—everything I was able to uncover during the course of my research. I have already described the Pioneer Cemetery on my blog; a link to that post can be found here:

Pioneer Cemetery is generally described as the broader community burial ground tied to the old fishing village / pioneer settlement on Cayo Costa, while Padilla Cemetery is described as the specific Padilla family cemetery on the island’s northeast end.

There is a wrinkle, though: some sources blur the line. Find a Grave says Cayo Costa Pioneer Cemetery began as a resting place for members of the Padilla family, which suggests overlap in origin. But Florida State Parks separately describes the Padilla family cemetery as the place where “Pappy” Padilla and his wife were buried, and where some 1910 hurricane victims may also be buried.

So, the safest way to say it is:

• • Pioneer Cemetery = the island’s general pioneer/fishing-settlement cemetery
  • Padilla Cemetery = the Padilla family’s own cemetery, more specifically associated with Captain Pappy Padilla and possibly the 1910 storm victims

In practice, the two are often confused because erosion, lost markers, and inconsistent modern listings have blurred the original layout and naming.

Padilla Cemetery – What Seems Well Documented.

I’m doing a second pass on the people, the Padilla family connection, and the hurricane-era burial story, and I’ll separate what is well documented from what is tradition or inference.

The cemetery is tied to the Padilla settlement on Cayo Costa, especially to Toribio / Tariva / Tervio Padilla, often called “Captain Pappy.” Florida State Parks says Tariva “Captain Pappy” Padilla founded a small fishing rancho on the north end of Cayo Costa shortly before the Civil War, and that the Padilla family lived there as part of a self-sustaining fishing community connected to Cuba.

A University of Florida / Randell Research Center history gives the clearest biographical detail I found: Toribio “Tariva” Padilla (1832–1910) was born in the Canary Islands, immigrated to the Florida Keys, became a U.S. citizen in 1862, and married Lainey/Juanita Perez in Key West in 1867. That source also places him firmly in the rancho economy of southwest Florida, where fish were caught and processed for the Cuban market.

Florida State Parks also states that an estimated 30 Cuban fishermen who died in a 1910 hurricane may be buried at the cemetery site, though much of the area has since eroded into the bay. That is the most authoritative public statement I found on the “mass burial” part of the story.

The 1910 hurricane itself is real and well documented. NOAA’s hurricane archive identifies the major October 1910 storm that crossed Cuba and struck southwest Florida near Cape Romano, and regional historical accounts say Cuban fishing vessels had sheltered along the harbor side of Cayo Costa as the storm approached Charlotte Harbor.

What the burial records suggest

Public cemetery databases support the Padilla connection, but they also reveal a naming problem.

Find a Grave’s entry for Cayo Costa Pioneer Cemetery says it “began as a final resting place for members of the Padilla family,” and that many original wooden markers have rotted or washed away. It also says islanders buried bodies of Cuban sailors washed ashore there in the late 1800s.

A separate Find a Grave entry exists for Padilla Cemetery, described as a different place on the northeast end of Cayo Costa. That entry says it should not be confused with Cayo Costa Pioneer Cemetery, and adds that after Hurricane Charley in 2004 shoreline erosion removed most visible evidence; it also says recovered victims of the 1910 hurricane were buried there.

So the public record does not fully agree on whether there was:

• • one cemetery later remembered by two names,
  • two nearby burial grounds with overlapping stories,
  • or a main cemetery plus a more isolated Padilla-family/hurricane burial area.

The safest conclusion is that the Padilla family and the hurricane victims are central to the burial history of north Cayo Costa, but the exact modern mapping of “Pioneer Cemetery” versus “Padilla Cemetery” is not fully settled in public-facing sources.

Named people tied to the site

The clearest named burial tied to the Padilla side of the story is Captain Juan Toribio “Pappy” Padilla. His Find a Grave memorial identifies him as an early settler on Cayo Costa and patriarch of the Padilla clan, and notes that his first name appears in several spellings, with Toribio appearing on birth, marriage, and citizenship documents. It also lists several children, which helps explain why the cemetery story is really a family-settlement story, not just one individual grave.

Florida State Parks, meanwhile, speaks more generally of the cemetery as a remnant of the broader pioneer and fishing-village population that remained on the island until 1958.

What is tradition, local memory, or informed inference

Some parts of the story are repeated often but are less solidly documented in official sources.

The idea that many original markers were wooden and disappeared is plausible and repeated in cemetery listings, but I did not find a state or academic source directly inventorying those vanished graves.

The tradition that bodies washed ashore at “Dead Man’s Cove” and were buried with the island’s own dead appears in Find a Grave, but I did not find an official archaeological or state report in this search naming that cove as the confirmed burial location.

Likewise, the strong claim that the 1910 victims are in Padilla Cemetery specifically appears in cemetery listings and local histories, while Florida State Parks uses more cautious wording: they “may” be buried at the site and note substantial erosion. That softer wording is probably the most responsible phrasing.

The strongest historical narrative

The most credible version of the story is this:

Cayo Costa’s cemetery grew out of the island’s Padilla-led fishing settlement, a frontier community linked to the old Cuban rancho trade. Captain Pappy Padilla and his family helped anchor that community in the late 19th century. When people died on this isolated island, burial had to happen there. Then the 1910 hurricane struck the southwest Florida coast and likely added a second layer of tragedy: the dead from wrecked Cuban fishing crews. Over time, storms and shoreline change erased many of the physical signs, leaving modern visitors with a sparse burial ground but a much larger unseen history under and beyond it.

Bottom line

What I’m confident saying is:

• • the cemetery is deeply connected to Captain Pappy Padilla and the Padilla family,
  • it is also tied to the memory of about 30 Cuban fishermen lost in the 1910 hurricane,

and the exact boundaries, names, and grave count are uncertain today because erosion and lost markers have blurred the site’s original layout.

Final Thoughts: Visit Cayo Costa by Boat

Padilla Cemetery is more than a historic site—it is part of the living story of Cayo Costa. In a remote place like Cayo Costa, burial on the island was often the only practical choice. Families lived far from the mainland, depended on the surrounding waters, and created their own close-knit island world. To understand Pioneer Cemetery, you have to understand what Cayo Costa used to be. Florida State Parks says that by the early 1900s, about 20 fishing families lived on the island, along with a school, post office, and grocery store. It was a living, working community where people built homes, raised children, and made their living from the Gulf and Charlotte Harbor.

Find a Grave says the cemetery began as a final resting place for Padilla family members. The Florida Museum’s Randell Research Center also identifies Toribio “Tariva” Padilla, often known as Captain Pappy, as a major figure in Cayo Costa’s history. That source says he was born in 1832, became a U.S. citizen in 1862, and became part of the Gulf rancho world that shaped island life in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Even with that Padilla connection, Pioneer Cemetery is still best understood as part of the wider pioneer story of Cayo Costa. It reflects not only one family, but the broader island community that grew around the fishing trade.

Storms, Erosion, and Lost History

Part of what makes Pioneer Cemetery feel so haunting today is that time has not left it untouched. Like much of Cayo Costa, the area has been shaped by storms, erosion, and shifting shorelines. Florida State Parks says an estimated 30 Cuban fishermen who died during the 1910 hurricane may also be buried at the site, although much of the area has eroded into the bay.

Our journey begins at Eldred’s Marina in Placida. We head South along Gasparilla Sound, passing beneath the Boca Grande Bridge—situated alongside the Historic Placida Trestle (1907–1981). Depending on weather conditions, available time, and our guests’ preferences, we may venture into the Southern section of the Main Boca Grande channel.

Let’s take this waterway. Continuing along the Intracoastal Waterway and passing Three Sisters Island, we turn into the Boca Grande Bayou channel.

On one side of the channel, magnificent luxury mansions come into view, while on the other lies the Boca Grande Golf Club.

Then, at a T-junction, we turn left (South). Along the way, we pass some of the most famous local landmarks:

🌊 Discover Cayo Costa Island

After resting on the sandbar, we will continue our journey through Gasparilla Sound and Boca Grande Pass toward Cayo Costa—barrier island.

The name Cayo Costa—which translates to “Island by the Coast” (or “Barrier Island”)—was bestowed upon this island by early Spanish traders. In the early 19th century, Spanish fishermen from Cuba established “fishing ranches” on the islands situated along Florida’s West Coast.

On our way to the Cayo Costa Ranger Station, we stopped to take a swim in the Cayo Costa Lagoon. I simply adore this place. On hot days, the water in the lagoon feels as warm as a Jacuzzi, while on cooler days, it is simply perfect.

🌿 Walk Through Nature & History

The Ranger Station is situated in Pelican Bay. We went ashore and explored the island grounds, walking along a trail less than a mile long; it cuts across the island and leads out to the Gulf of America coast, not far from Murdock Point . John Milton Murdock (1867–1925), a land speculator who developed the area.

A short trail takes us across the island to the Gulf side, where you’ll find:

• Miles of untouched white-sand beaches

• Incredible shelling opportunities

• Complete peace and quiet

On our way back, we visited the Cayo Costa Pioneer Cemetery—a small, quiet, and secluded historic burial ground. Here lie the remains of Captain Peter Nelson (whose headstone bears the epitaph: “After life’s feverish bustle, he sleeps peacefully”), as well as several members of the Padilla family—some of the island’s earliest settlers, who established themselves here in the early 20th century.

At Northeast of island located Padilla Cemetery. Is a remote historic site primarily significant as the resting place of 19th-century settler “Captain Pappy” Padilla and approximately 30 Cuban fishermen who perished in a 1910 hurricane. The site is noted for its extreme erosion, having been ravaged by Hurricane Charley in 2004, leaving few, if any, visible markers remaining.

Cayo Costa State Park offers a unique, secluded camping experience accessible only by boat or kayak, featuring 9 miles of untouched Gulf Coast beaches. It is known for its “Old Florida” feel, offering primitive tent camping and basic cabins, excellent shelling, snorkeling, and, due to its remote nature, no electricity and minimal cell service.

Dolphins.

They are often everywhere—playing, jumping, and swimming alongside the boat.

Although it happens rarely, you may occasionally encounter a pod of manatees here.

It’s a hidden paradise.

This scenic waterway offers two distinct experiences:

As we continued through Mooring Passage into Venetian Bay, the scenery shifted into a beautiful blend of elegance and coastal charm. Venetian-style waterfront homes lined the canals, with impressive high-rise buildings rising in the background—creating a unique and dynamic view.

One of the most striking perspectives of Naples reveals itself when viewed from the water. From the Gulf of Mexico, the skyline of elegant high-rise buildings rises above the coastline, creating a beautiful contrast between modern architecture and natural surroundings. As we continued into Venetian Bay, this view transformed into a more intimate and luxurious scene, where stunning waterfront homes blend seamlessly with impressive high-rise towers in the background.

Along the bay, you’ll also find some of Naples’ most iconic waterfront restaurants, where boats dock just steps away from dining tables. This unique combination of city skyline, coastal charm, and vibrant waterfront lifestyle is something you can only truly appreciate from the water.

One of the most magical highlights of the day came when we encountered playful dolphins along our route. Watching them glide effortlessly through the water alongside the boat added a spontaneous and unforgettable moment to our journey. On our return, we made a relaxing stop at Keewaydin Cove, a popular sandbar known for its soft sands and shallow, clear waters—perfect for unwinding and enjoying the Florida sunshine.
