A new trip to Cabbage Key has been developed and tested by Florida Gulf Discovery LLC.

I call it “The 6-Hour Cabbage Key Trip — From Sunset to Moonrise.”

This experience was inspired by several of my “4-Hour Sunset” trips. Since Cabbage Key is so close to Boca Grande Pass, it would be a shame not to visit this special place and share it with guests.

Now, let me describe this beautiful route.

Depending on the sunset time, we depart from Eldred’s Marina about 2-3 hours before sunset. Heading south, we pass under the Boca Grande Bridge, with the Boca Grande Sandbar lying just to the west. From there, we cross Gasparilla Sound toward Boca Grande Pass, where Pine Island Sound begins.

In Gasparilla Sound, we often encounter playful dolphins. After passing Three Sisters Island, we enter Boca Grande Island through its scenic cove. This stretch—about two miles long—offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the beauty of the island from the water.

Along the way, we pass well-known landmarks such as Boca Grande Bayou, Gasparilla Golf Club, The Outlet Restaurant, The Gasparilla Inn, The Pink Elephant, Eagle Grille & Miller’s Dockside, and Whidden’s Marina (founded in 1926 and now listed for $17.5 million).

We then continue to Boca Grande Pass, overlooking the vast Gulf of America, to witness a cosmic sunset—a perfect time for photos and memories of the incredible views.

As soon as the sun dips below the horizon, our trip continues along Cayo Costa Island in Pine Island Sound. During this time, we watch the sky transform through a breathtaking range of twilight colors. About half an hour later, we arrive at Cabbage Key Marina.

After docking, we take a short walk and climb the historic Cabbage Key Water Tower, originally built in the 1930s and standing 60 feet tall. From the top, the glowing sky creates unforgettable photo opportunities and lasting memories.

Next, it’s time to visit the Cabbage Key Restaurant, a charming place with a story that began in the early 1900s. Enjoy a delicious dinner and a glass of fine wine surrounded by the island’s old Florida charm.

After that is finished we get onto the boat, moving and looking for the moon. The time difference between the months and the position of the moon can change. But that doesn’t stop us from uncredible fillings if viewing. The combination of time spent on the water between the islands in the darkness and calm waters is amazing fillings.

Finally, guided by the silver light of the moon, we return to Eldred’s Marina.
Six hours pass like a dream — just as my guests always say.
