Exploring the Hidden Beaches and Sandbars of Bokeelia, Florida

Southwest Florida is filled with hidden waterways, remote beaches, and shallow sandbars that most visitors never get the chance to experience. During this private boat tour with five guests, we explored some of the most beautiful and lesser-known locations around Bokeelia, Florida, Pine Island Sound, and Shell Pass aboard my boat with Florida Gulf Discovery LLC.

Our adventure began at Jug Creek Marina in Bokeelia. Before heading out onto the water, we stopped for lunch at the famous Jug Creek Fish House. With blue skies overhead and calm conditions across Pine Island Sound, it felt like the perfect day for exploration.

After departing the marina, we carefully navigated through the shallow waters of Shell Pass. This region requires close attention to tides and water depth, especially for larger vessels, but the reward is access to some of the most scenic waters in Southwest Florida.

As we entered Pine Island Sound, the water shifted through incredible shades of emerald green and turquoise. The conditions were calm, and the surrounding mangrove islands created a peaceful atmosphere far removed from crowded tourist destinations.

From Shell Pass, we continued eastward toward Calusa Island. This shallow-water region is known for wildlife activity, particularly manatees that often travel through the grass flats surrounding the island. During the trip, we observed several manatees moving slowly through the shallow waters near the shoreline.

While cruising along Calusa Island, we discovered a beautiful shell-covered beach facing the inland waters near Jug Creek. The shoreline was lined with shells of every size and color, creating a natural beach unlike anything found on the mainland. Because of the shallow depth, we anchored the boat approximately 4 to 6 feet offshore and carefully walked toward the beach.

In locations like this, water shoes are absolutely essential. Many of the shells are sharp, and the bottom conditions can change quickly beneath your feet.

We spent about thirty minutes exploring the shoreline, collecting shells, taking photographs, and simply enjoying the quiet beauty of this hidden location. One of the greatest advantages of a private boat tour is the ability to slow down and truly experience places that most people pass by.

After leaving the beach, we continued toward our main destination — a remote sandbar I personally call “Bokeelia Sandbar,” though many of my returning guests know it as “Pavel’s Secret Sandbar.”

As we approached the sandbar, we spotted a family of manatees moving through the shallow water nearby. Only a few other boats were visible in the distance, making the entire area feel peaceful and untouched.

The sandbar itself is remarkable because it contains two completely different environments side by side. One area consists of soft white sand perfect for swimming and relaxing, while another section is completely covered in shells. The division between the sandy shoals and shell-covered bottom creates a unique landscape rarely seen elsewhere in Southwest Florida.

While my guests enjoyed swimming and relaxing on the sandbar, I launched my drone to capture aerial footage of the surrounding waters. From above, the patterns created by the shallow water, shell beds, and tidal channels become even more spectacular.

However, this region is exposed directly to the open winds of Pine Island Sound, meaning weather conditions can change rapidly. Anyone exploring these shallow-water environments should always pay close attention to both weather forecasts and tide schedules for safety.

We remained there for nearly two hours. By the time we prepared to leave, the incoming tide had already begun covering the sandbar beneath the water. Areas that had been fully exposed earlier in the afternoon slowly disappeared beneath the rising tide.

As we departed, we experienced one final surprise.

Several dolphins appeared beside our boat and escorted us through the shallow waters for approximately 300 feet. It was one of those rare Southwest Florida moments that cannot truly be planned. Every time I attempted to pick up my camera, the dolphins disappeared beneath the surface again, almost as if they were avoiding being filmed.

Sometimes the best moments on the water are the ones simply experienced in real life.

🤔 What is the difference? 🏝️Intercoastal: Means “connecting the coast.” 🏝️ Intracoastal: Means “contained within the coast.”

When I first began navigating boats around Venice, Lemon Bay, and Gasparilla Sound, I kept asking myself the same question:
Why are some places so narrow between the ICW markers, while right next to them the water is wide, flat, and extremely shallow?

At first it didn’t make sense. The channel felt like a thin ribbon running through a giant water world of sandbars, grass flats, and open bays. I learned quickly to respect the markers—one step outside, and you were in ankle-deep water.

One day I met several older local boaters and fishermen, the kind of people who spent their whole lives on these waters. They smiled when I asked why the ICW felt so tight and unnatural in some places.
Their answer opened a window into the history of this coastline—an entire era of waterway construction, dredging, changes in geography, and a time before the modern Intracoastal Waterway even existed.

Before the ICW: A Wild and Shallow Coastline

Long before the channel between Venice and Placida was dredged, this coastline was a maze:

• • Natural bays
  • Shallow grass flats
  • Mangrove islands
  • Shifting tidal shoals
  • Narrow cuts and passes that changed with storms

This was Old Florida—beautiful, unpredictable, and ruled by tides and wind. Locals navigated it using memory, landmarks, and trial-and-error. One fisherman told me that, before dredging, Lemon Bay was so shallow you could walk across parts of it at low tide.

For decades, different bays and sounds were separated by natural shallows. You couldn’t run straight through from Venice to Placida the way you can today.

The Dream of a Continuous Waterway

In the early 1900s, the idea of a protected inland route along the Gulf Coast began to grow. Boats needed a safe way to travel without going into the open Gulf, especially during winter storms. Coastal communities also needed a better way to move goods, fish, and supplies.

By the mid-20th century, the federal government finally committed to the project. In the 1960s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began a major effort to connect the natural waterways into a single navigable channel.

The project was authorized under a series of federal laws, including the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1945 and subsequent amendments. These directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to build and maintain some 160 miles of waterway, including this stretch, to a navigable depth of 9 feet (plus some over-depth allowance) for safe navigation.

For our region, the transformation began around 1960.

1960s: The Digging of the Venice–Placida ICW Route

What we now see as a continuous water highway was once a patchwork of shallow wetlands. Construction teams dredged through parts of Lemon Bay, opened narrow connections, and carved a deeper channel linking:

By 1965–1967, the inland route was finally connected. The ICW markers we know today were added to guide boaters safely through the new channel.

The natural bays remained wide and shallow, but the ICW became the “spine” of safe navigation. That’s why today the markers sit in narrow lines—even in huge open water—because the depth is man-made, not natural.

Why the Water Still Looks the Way It Does Today

Even though the ICW exists, the surrounding areas did not change much. The natural geography is still:

• • broad shallow flats
  • grass beds
  • oyster bars
  • mangrove shorelines
  • shifting sand from storms and tidal flow

That’s why the ICW feels “tight”—the dredged channel cuts through a massive shallow estuary. One mistake outside the markers and you find the bottom fast.

Locals explained to me that some of the old natural channels disappeared after dredging changed water movement. Some new bars formed. A few small islands slowly eroded away. Storms like Donna and later Charley also reshaped the coast, reopening some places and closing others.

From Commercial Route to Recreational Paradise

Originally the ICW here was built for commercial boats and working fishermen. Today, it’s mostly used for:

• • recreational boaters
  • sailing
  • fishing trips
  • wildlife watching
  • eco-tourism
  • sunset cruises

The “working waterway” became a playground and a scenic route for anyone who loves the water.

But the ICW still needs maintenance. Shoaling continues to creep in, especially near Venice and Stump Pass. Dredging projects—most recently in 2019—keep the waterway safe.

A Living Waterway with a Living Memory

Every time I take a boat from Venice down through Lemon Bay and into Gasparilla Sound, I remember the stories from the old captains. I picture how this place looked before the ICW—wild, unpredictable, and shaped only by nature.

The waterway we enjoy today is a combination of:

  • human engineering
  • local knowledge
  • and decades of change

For me, knowing this history makes the ride richer. When you follow that narrow line of ICW markers between miles of shallow water, you’re traveling through both nature and history at the same time.

Conclusion

Today, when you travel through the ICW between Venice and Placida, it’s easy to forget how difficult this coastline once was to navigate.

When I first started boating here, I realized how easy it is to get into trouble if you don’t know the area. The bays are wide and beautiful, but very shallow. The ICW changes everything. As long as you follow the markers, you’re safe—even if it’s your first time on these waters. And at night, those illuminated markers guide you through places you could never cross in the dark without them. The ICW truly makes exploring this coastline possible for everyone.

Many people think it’s a sign of a serious attack, but the truth is far more interesting.

These marks often come from dolphins, and they reveal a fascinating piece of Gulf wildlife behavior that happens beneath the surface every day.

🌊 Dolphins: Playful, Intelligent, and Naturally Curious

Bottlenose dolphins are some of the most intelligent marine animals in the world. They hunt, communicate, coordinate, and — just like humans — they play.

When anglers reel up fish, dolphins often become curious about the movement, sound, or vibration. They are especially interested in:

• • Struggling snappers near the surface
  • Schools of baitfish around the boat
  • Sounds from fishing lines or boats

Sometimes, dolphins gently test or nudge a fish without actually wanting to eat it. This behavior leaves distinctive marks on certain snappers.

🐟 Snapper Bite Marks: Why They Happen

The marks usually appear as:

• • Clean semicircular impressions
  • Surface-level bite testing
  • Missing scales
  • Small scrapes or tooth patterns

The most common reason?

Dolphins “playing” with the fish, not trying to kill it.

Dolphins often:

• • Swipe the fish from the line
  • Mouth it lightly
  • Nudge it with their rostrum
  • Toss it between each other (especially juveniles)
  • Release it unharmed

Because groupers and snappers are strong swimmers, many escape even after a dolphin’s quick test bite.

🎣 A Real Example From Our Offshore Trips

During one of our recent Gulf Discovery trips, we pulled up snappers #1 and #3 from the right side of the cooler. Both had very clear marks left by a dolphin — shallow, evenly spaced impressions.

Nothing dangerous had happened to the fish. It was simply a moment of nature interacting with anglers in a playful way. Dolphins were circling the reef that day, curious about the commotion and passing by the boat several times.

This happens often on deeper reefs, especially on calm days when sound travels far through the water.

🧠 What Makes Dolphin Behavior So Unique?

Dolphins are known for their:
✔ Curiosity
✔ Ability to learn
✔ Group play
✔ Tool use
✔ Complex communication
✔ Coordination with each other

They sometimes “inspect” a fish caught by anglers simply because:

• • It’s moving oddly
  • It’s accessible near the surface
  • It’s a perfect object for group play
  • It’s something new in their environment

Just like children tossing a ball, young dolphins will sometimes toss a fish — then get bored and let it go.

🐬 Are Dolphins Stealing Fish? Sometimes.

It’s not always play.

Occasionally dolphins do:

• • Grab the fish and release. The dolphin may repeat this 2-3 times before you pull it out of the water.
  • Eat part of it. This can happen, but in my experience it has never happened.
  • Take the whole catch. Sometimes, if the fish was not securely hooked.

But most marks we see on snappers are not full predation — they’re light, shallow bites typical of dolphins investigating or playing.

🔍 How You Can Tell Dolphin Bite Marks From Other Causes

Dolphin marks:

• • Shallow semicircle shape
  • Spaced evenly (teeth pattern)
  • Usually no deep tear
  • Scales removed but flesh intact

Shark marks:

• • Deep tearing
  • Missing chunks
  • Angled jaw pattern

Barracuda cuts:

• • Very sharp, straight slice
  • Flesh cleanly removed
  • Fast, precise attacks

Snapper marks from dolphins are the easiest to identify — and the least harmful.

A new trip to Cabbage Key has been developed and tested by Florida Gulf Discovery LLC.

I call it “The 6-Hour Cabbage Key Trip — From Sunset to Moonrise.”

This experience was inspired by several of my “4-Hour Sunset” trips. Since Cabbage Key is so close to Boca Grande Pass, it would be a shame not to visit this special place and share it with guests.

Now, let me describe this beautiful route.

Depending on the sunset time, we depart from Eldred’s Marina about 2-3 hours before sunset. Heading south, we pass under the Boca Grande Bridge, with the Boca Grande Sandbar lying just to the west. From there, we cross Gasparilla Sound toward Boca Grande Pass, where Pine Island Sound begins.

In Gasparilla Sound, we often encounter playful dolphins. After passing Three Sisters Island, we enter Boca Grande Island through its scenic cove. This stretch—about two miles long—offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the beauty of the island from the water.

Along the way, we pass well-known landmarks such as Boca Grande Bayou, Gasparilla Golf Club, The Outlet Restaurant, The Gasparilla Inn, The Pink Elephant, Eagle Grille & Miller’s Dockside, and Whidden’s Marina (founded in 1926 and now listed for $17.5 million).

We then continue to Boca Grande Pass, overlooking the vast Gulf of America, to witness a cosmic sunset—a perfect time for photos and memories of the incredible views.

As soon as the sun dips below the horizon, our trip continues along Cayo Costa Island in Pine Island Sound. During this time, we watch the sky transform through a breathtaking range of twilight colors. About half an hour later, we arrive at Cabbage Key Marina.

After docking, we take a short walk and climb the historic Cabbage Key Water Tower, originally built in the 1930s and standing 60 feet tall. From the top, the glowing sky creates unforgettable photo opportunities and lasting memories.

Next, it’s time to visit the Cabbage Key Restaurant, a charming place with a story that began in the early 1900s. Enjoy a delicious dinner and a glass of fine wine surrounded by the island’s old Florida charm.

After that is finished we get onto the boat, moving and looking for the moon. The time difference between the months and the position of the moon can change. But that doesn’t stop us from uncredible fillings if viewing. The combination of time spent on the water between the islands in the darkness and calm waters is amazing fillings.

Finally, guided by the silver light of the moon, we return to Eldred’s Marina.
Six hours pass like a dream — just as my guests always say.

Among the many birds I encounter, the majestic osprey stands out as the true king and queen of Boca Grande. These top-tier hunters can spend hours perched high above the water, watching over the bay like vigilant sheriffs. Their precise dives and fresh catches are always a thrill to witness.

Other fascinating birds include the great egret and brown pelican, which spend long hours hunting in shallow waters. Some gather near fish cleaning stations, but most are patient, focused hunters, perfecting the art of waiting for the perfect catch.

On rare and exciting occasions, I’ve even spotted pink flamingos, similar to the Aegean flamingo, visiting our waters—from Manasota Key to Pine Island Sound. Their vibrant presence is a reminder of the hidden beauty Florida’s waterways hold, and I hope to share photos of these stunning birds on my website soon.

Before and After Hurricane Milton

Milton Pass was created by Hurricane Milton on October 9-10, 2024, cutting a channel through the barrier island at the south end of Manasota Key and divided into two parts of Stump Pass Beach State Park.

Looking back at history, where Milton Pass is now, is where Stump Pass was in the late 1800s. 

At a meeting of the Charlotte County Commissioners, officials recommended against allowing two passes on the same stretch of Manasota Key. 

The new pass crosses Stump Pass Beach State Park, connecting the Gulf of Mexico and Lemon Bay, after Hurricane Milton struck the southwest coast of Florida on October 9-10. 

County consultants believe the pass should not remain. 

After reviewing the recommendations presented by the county consultants, I must respectfully disagree with their position on the proposed closure of Milton Pass. The consultants’ findings appear to lack sufficient field-based data and do not adequately account for the local hydrodynamic and ecological conditions observed in this area.

Based on my extensive experience operating in these coastal waters, Milton Pass plays a significant role in maintaining natural water circulation and supporting healthy estuarine habitats. Restricting or closing the pass could lead to reduced water exchange, sediment buildup, and potential negative impacts on marine life and water quality.

I strongly recommend that any management decisions be based on comprehensive environmental assessments that incorporate on-site data, long-term tidal studies, and consultation with local professionals who have direct operational knowledge of these waterways.

I have not been able to find the names of the so-called “county consultants” or any educational credentials supporting their recommendations. Closing Milton Pass, in my opinion, would be a serious mistake. It would do little to protect our environment and would not significantly affect the natural tidal flow in our local waterways. Even more concerning, this would be an extremely expensive project, one that could easily be destroyed by the next hurricane, leaving us with wasted resources and lost opportunity.  

Our community deserves solutions that are both effective and sustainable—investments that enhance recreational opportunities while preserving the natural beauty and vitality of this incredible place. Rather than pursuing short-term fixes like closing Milton Pass, let’s focus on projects that truly make a lasting difference and respect the resilience of nature.

The coastline around Manasota Key, Milton Pass, Stump Pass, and Ski Alley (Petterson Cut) represents one of the most dynamic and ecologically important areas along Florida’s Gulf Coast. For years, I’ve explored Stump Pass Beach State Park, observing how tides, winds, and storms continually reshape this natural landscape.

In 2024, Hurricane Milton opened a new waterway now called Milton Pass, between Manasota Key and Knight Island. This newly formed inlet has changed local currents and sediment patterns, influencing both the environment and navigation in the area. It’s a living example of how coastal systems evolve — sometimes overnight — through natural forces. 

Stump Pass Beach State Park has long served as a protective buffer for wildlife, including nesting sea turtles, shorebirds, manatees, and a variety of marine species. The park’s beaches, mangroves, and seagrass beds are essential habitats that support the health of the entire Charlotte Harbor estuary. 

My goal is to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this fragile ecosystem. Preserving water quality, limiting boat traffic in shallow areas at high speed – like Ski Alley, and supporting coastal restoration projects can help maintain the balance that nature has created here over centuries.  

This place — shaped by wind, waves, and time — reminds us that the best environmental protection begins with understanding and respect for the natural processes that sustain it.

As a professional boat captain and long-time observer of our coastal waterways, I respectfully disagree with the conclusions presented by the county consultants regarding the proposed closure of Milton Pass. Based on years of direct experience navigating these local channels, I believe their analysis does not fully reflect the dynamic nature of our coastal ecosystem or the vital role Milton Pass plays in water circulation, fish migration, and local recreation.

Closing Milton Pass would not only disrupt natural tidal flow but could also negatively affect marine life, water quality, and the livelihoods that depend on eco-tourism and sustainable boating. I encourage decision-makers to seek more comprehensive environmental studies and input from those who work on the water every day before making irreversible changes to this area.
