<p>Yesterday I had the pleasure of taking four wonderful guests on a sunset tour through <strong>Gasparilla Pass</strong>, and it turned into one of the most memorable evenings we’ve had this season. The Gulf of America was calm, with only a light breeze brushing the surface, creating ideal conditions for a relaxed and scenic ride.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Dolphins Welcoming Us at the Pass</strong></h3>
<p><!-- /wp:heading --></p>
<p><!-- wp:paragraph -->Just before we reached the open Gulf, we were greeted by a group of <strong>5–6 playful dolphins</strong>. They glided beside the boat, surfacing and diving again, giving everyone the perfect opportunity to take photos and enjoy the magic of meeting these intelligent animals up close. My guests were smiling from ear to ear as the dolphins followed us along the channels of the Intracoastal Waterway.</p>

<p><!-- /wp:heading --></p>
<p><!-- wp:paragraph -->Once we were about a mile offshore at <strong>Gasparilla Pass</strong>, the Gulf opened into a wide, glowing horizon. The sunset was one of those rare ones: clear sky, deep golden light, and slowly shifting colors from <strong>yellow to orange to rich red</strong>. The reflection on the calm water made the whole moment feel almost unreal. Everyone quietly watched the sun melt into the Gulf of America—peaceful, warm, and unforgettable.</p>

<p><!-- wp:paragraph -->After the sun disappeared, we continued our journey back along the waterways. <strong>The sky turned dark quickly</strong>, and my guests loved the adventure of riding through the night. With navigation lights guiding the way and the quiet sounds of the water around us, the return trip had its own special charm. Many guests tell me that being on the water after sunset feels like a completely different world—calm, mysterious, and exciting at the same time.</p>

<p><span data-contrast="auto">Milton Pass was created </span><span data-contrast="auto">by Hurricane Milton on October 9-10, 2024, cutting a channel through the barrier island at the south end of Manasota Key and divided into two parts of Stump Pass Beach State Park.</span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Looking back at history, where Milton Pass is now, is where Stump Pass was in the late 1800s.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">At a meeting of the Charlotte County Commissioners, officials recommended against allowing two passes on the same stretch of Manasota Key.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">The new pass crosses Stump Pass Beach State Park, connecting the Gulf of Mexico and Lemon Bay, after Hurricane Milton struck the southwest coast of Florida on October 9-10.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><strong><em>County consultants believe the pass should not remain. </em></strong></p>
<p data-start="232" data-end="570">After reviewing the recommendations presented by the county consultants, <strong>I must respectfully disagree with their position on the proposed closure of Milton Pass.</strong> The consultants’ findings appear to lack sufficient field-based data and do not adequately account for the local hydrodynamic and ecological conditions observed in this area.</p>
<p data-start="572" data-end="915">Based on my extensive experience operating in these coastal waters, Milton Pass plays a significant role in maintaining natural water circulation and supporting healthy estuarine habitats. Restricting or closing the pass could lead to reduced water exchange, sediment buildup, and potential negative impacts on marine life and water quality.</p>
<p data-start="917" data-end="1177">I strongly recommend that any management decisions be based on comprehensive environmental assessments that incorporate on-site data, long-term tidal studies, and consultation with local professionals who have direct operational knowledge of these waterways.</p>

<p><span data-contrast="auto">I have not been able to find the names of the so-called “county consultants” or any educational credentials supporting their recommendations. Closing Milton Pass, in my opinion, would be a serious mistake. It would do little to protect our environment and would not significantly affect the natural tidal flow in our local waterways. Even more concerning, this would be an extremely expensive project, one that could easily be destroyed by the next hurricane, leaving us with wasted resources and lost opportunity. </span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Our community deserves solutions that are both effective and sustainable—investments that enhance recreational opportunities while preserving the natural beauty and vitality of this incredible place. Rather than pursuing short-term fixes like closing Milton Pass, let’s focus on projects that truly make a lasting difference and respect the resilience of nature.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<hr />

<p data-start="250" data-end="716">As a professional boat captain and long-time observer of our coastal waterways, I respectfully disagree with the conclusions presented by the county consultants regarding the proposed closure of Milton Pass. Based on years of direct experience navigating these local channels, I believe their analysis does not fully reflect the dynamic nature of our coastal ecosystem or the vital role Milton Pass plays in water circulation, fish migration, and local recreation.</p>
<p data-start="718" data-end="1093">Closing Milton Pass would not only disrupt natural tidal flow but could also negatively affect marine life, water quality, and the livelihoods that depend on eco-tourism and sustainable boating. I encourage decision-makers to seek more comprehensive environmental studies and input from those who work on the water every day before making irreversible changes to this area.</p>

<p><em><strong>Is it your dream to see wild dolphins up close?</strong></em></p>
<p>There’s something truly magical about spotting dolphins gliding beside your boat, leaping in the wake, or surfacing to greet you with a splash. Southwest Florida is one of the best regions in the country to see these playful marine mammals in their natural environment. With calm Gulf waters, scenic bays, and plenty of fish-rich estuaries, dolphins thrive here year-round.</p>
<p>As a local boat captain and nature guide, I’ve spent countless hours exploring these waters—and I’d like to share my favorite dolphin-viewing locations with you.</p>
<p>If you’re planning a private dolphin tour or simply looking for the best spots to experience nature up close, here are <strong>five of the top places in Southwest Florida to see dolphins from your boat.</strong></p>
<hr />
<h3>1. <strong>Lemon Bay &amp; Gasparilla Pass</strong></h3>
<p>Lemon Bay is one of the most reliable places to see dolphins up close. The calm, protected waters are full of fish, which attract pods of dolphins feeding near mangroves and sandy shoals. It’s not unusual to see them leaping just off the bow or riding your boat’s wake as you cruise between Englewood Beach and Gasparilla Pass. Its secluded nature makes it one of the most peaceful and natural dolphin habitats in the region. As you cruise along the coastline, you’ll often see pods of bottlenose dolphins playing, feeding, or surfacing right beside the boat.</p>
<figure id="attachment_9021" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9021" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-9021" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-300x169.jpg" alt="Lemon Bay West site housing, Dolphin Site" width="500" height="281" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-300x169.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-768x432.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-340x191.jpg 340w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-600x338.jpg 600w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-125x70.jpg 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-9021" class="wp-caption-text">Lemon Bay West site housing, Dolphin Site</figcaption></figure>
<p>The calm, shallow waters around Cayo Costa are perfect for spotting marine life. Dolphins here often travel close to shore, following schools of fish near the mangroves and grass flats. It’s an ideal location for both dolphin watching and shelling, making it a favorite stop on many private boat tours.</p>
<p>Dolphins often follow along the shoreline, especially on the Gulf side where the water is crystal clear. It’s common to see them jumping in the surf while you anchor nearby for a beach break.</p>
<hr />
<h3>2. <strong>Stump Pass &amp; Ski Alley</strong></h3>
<p data-start="136" data-end="390">If you’re looking for one of the most exciting and peaceful ways to see wild dolphins in Southwest Florida, join Captain Pavel for a scenic boat trip through <strong data-start="294" data-end="308">Stump Pass</strong> and <strong data-start="313" data-end="326">Ski Alley</strong> — two of the best dolphin-viewing areas along the Gulf Coast!</p>
<figure id="attachment_9026" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9026" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-9026" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-300x169.jpg" alt="Gulf of America &amp; Stump Pass at Ski Alley, Florida Gulf Discovery LLC" width="500" height="281" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-300x169.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-768x432.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-340x191.jpg 340w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-600x338.jpg 600w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-125x70.jpg 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-9026" class="wp-caption-text">Gulf of America &amp; Stump Pass at Ski Alley, Florida Gulf Discovery LLC</figcaption></figure>
<p data-start="392" data-end="799">Leaving from Lemon Bay, the adventure begins as we head toward <strong data-start="455" data-end="469">Stump Pass</strong>, a beautiful natural waterway connecting the bay to the Gulf of Mexico. The calm, clear water here is a favorite playground for local dolphin pods. Often, you’ll see them swimming alongside the boat, surfacing just a few feet away. It’s an unforgettable sight — dolphins jumping, playing, and sometimes even racing in our wake!</p>
<p data-start="801" data-end="1067">Next, we cruise through <strong data-start="825" data-end="838">Ski Alley</strong>, a long, sheltered stretch of water that’s perfect for spotting more dolphins, manatees, and coastal birds. Surrounded by mangrove islands and white sandy shores, this area offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.</p>
<hr />
<h3>3. <strong>Boca Grande Pass</strong></h3>
<p>Known as one of the deepest natural inlets in Florida, <strong>Boca Grande Pass</strong> is famous for its incredible marine activity — and not just for tarpon fishing. The deep blue waters attract dolphins year-round, who chase baitfish stirred up by the strong tides.</p>
<figure id="attachment_9022" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9022" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-9022" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-300x169.jpg" alt="Boca Grande Pass and Lighthouse, Dolphins site" width="500" height="282" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-300x169.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-768x432.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-1536x865.jpg 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-340x191.jpg 340w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-600x338.jpg 600w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-125x70.jpg 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-9022" class="wp-caption-text">Boca Grande Pass and Lighthouse, Dolphins site</figcaption></figure>
<p>At the southern tip of Gasparilla Island, this scenic pass is a hotspot for dolphin activity. The strong currents bring plenty of fish, drawing pods of dolphins that love to show off near passing boats. You may even spot them alongside tarpon fishermen during the summer season.</p>
<p>As you cruise through the Pass or along the Gasparilla Island shoreline, it’s common to see multiple pods of dolphins at once. They often leap in your wake, surf alongside the boat, or circle near the jetties. The backdrop of the Boca Grande lighthouse adds to the beauty of the experience, making it a must-see destination for dolphin lovers.</p>
<hr />
<h3>4. <strong>Cayo Costa Island</strong></h3>
<p>Just north of Captiva Island lies Cayo Costa — an untouched barrier island accessible only by boat. Its secluded nature makes it one of the most peaceful and natural dolphin habitats in the region. As you cruise along the coastline, you’ll often see pods of bottlenose dolphins playing, feeding, or surfacing right beside the boat.</p>
<figure id="attachment_9011" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9011" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-9011" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cayo-Costa-Gulf-Beach-with-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-14-300x169.jpg" alt="Cayo Costa Gulf Beach with Florida Gulf Discovery LLC" width="500" height="281" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cayo-Costa-Gulf-Beach-with-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-14-300x169.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cayo-Costa-Gulf-Beach-with-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-14-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cayo-Costa-Gulf-Beach-with-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-14-768x432.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cayo-Costa-Gulf-Beach-with-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-14-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cayo-Costa-Gulf-Beach-with-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-14-340x191.jpg 340w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cayo-Costa-Gulf-Beach-with-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-14-600x337.jpg 600w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cayo-Costa-Gulf-Beach-with-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-14-125x70.jpg 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Cayo-Costa-Gulf-Beach-with-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-14.jpg 1919w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-9011" class="wp-caption-text">Cayo Costa Gulf Beach with Florida Gulf Discovery LLC</figcaption></figure>

<hr />
<h3><strong>5. Captiva &amp; Sanibel Islands</strong></h3>
<p>Between Pine Island, Captiva, and Sanibel lies the <strong>Pine Island Sound Aquatic Preserve</strong>, a pristine estuary filled with wildlife. These waters are home to dozens of resident dolphin pods that are incredibly social and often approach boats out of curiosity.</p>

<p>These barrier islands are legendary for shelling and dolphin watching. Cruise along the Intracoastal Waterway between Sanibel and Captiva or around Blind Pass — dolphins are almost guaranteed. They often swim right next to boats, delighting passengers with their friendly curiosity and acrobatics.</p>
<p>This area combines lush mangrove islands, seagrass meadows, and calm bays — the perfect environment for spotting dolphins, manatees, and even sea turtles. When the tide is right, you’ll see dolphins corralling fish into shallow areas and then launching out of the water in a spectacular feeding display.</p>
<p>A private tour through Pine Island Sound is truly a wildlife lover’s dream — peaceful, scenic, and full of surprises.</p>

			<h3><strong>5 Best Spots to Visit by Boat in Southwest Florida</strong></h3>
<p>Southwest Florida’s coastline is best experienced from the water. From social sandbars where boaters gather to quiet lagoons tucked behind barrier islands, the region offers an incredible variety of places to drop anchor, swim, shell hunt, and soak up the sunshine. Below are five top destinations that every boater should know — each with its own personality, local tips, and reasons to visit.</p>
<h4><strong>1. Boca Grande Sandbar</strong></h4>
<figure id="attachment_8924" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-8924" style="width: 400px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-8924" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Boca-Grande-Sandbar-Memorial-Day-2024Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-300x168.jpg" alt="Boca Grande Sandbar, Memorial Day 2024, Florida Gulf Discovery LLC" width="400" height="225" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Boca-Grande-Sandbar-Memorial-Day-2024Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-300x168.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Boca-Grande-Sandbar-Memorial-Day-2024Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Boca-Grande-Sandbar-Memorial-Day-2024Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-768x431.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Boca-Grande-Sandbar-Memorial-Day-2024Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-1536x862.jpg 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Boca-Grande-Sandbar-Memorial-Day-2024Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-340x191.jpg 340w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Boca-Grande-Sandbar-Memorial-Day-2024Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-600x337.jpg 600w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Boca-Grande-Sandbar-Memorial-Day-2024Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-125x70.jpg 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Boca-Grande-Sandbar-Memorial-Day-2024Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC.jpg 1908w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-8924" class="wp-caption-text">Boca Grande Sandbar, Memorial Day 2024, Florida Gulf Discovery LLC</figcaption></figure>
<p>The Boca Grande Sandbar is legendary among Gulf Coast boaters. Just off Gasparilla Island, a shallow ribbon of white sand surfaces in clear, turquoise water and becomes a magnet for boaters looking to relax, splash, and socialize.</p>
<p><strong>Why go:</strong> The sandbar is perfect for families with shallow, calm water. It’s a lively spot for floating, swimming, and enjoying the company of other boaters.</p>
<p><strong>Best times &amp; vibe:</strong> Weekends are high-energy with groups and music, while weekdays feel like a private getaway.</p>
<p><strong>Local tips:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Anchor outside seagrass beds to protect the environment.</li>
<li>Bring shade and a floating cooler — the sun can be intense.</li>
<li>Arrive near low tide to enjoy more exposed sand.</li>
</ul>
<h4><strong>2. Ski Alley (Peterson Cut)</strong></h4>
