A Beautiful Day on the Water Yesterday my wife and our friends joined me for a full day exploring the Venice, Laurel and Nokomis waterways. Our morning started at 9 AM with a cool breeze and a little chill in the air, but by the time we reached the late morning, the weather warmed up beautifully and created the perfect conditions for cruising. We entered the Venice Inlet and explored about 2 miles north and 6 miles south, including a scenic route through Lyons Channel 1 mile long. Along the east side of Snake Island, we visited three amazing bays: Lyons Bay, Dona Bay, and Roberts Bay, each offering different landscapes, waterways, and waterfront homes.

Snake Island was originally the southern tip of a peninsula called Turner Key. In the early 1900s, maps referred to this general area as “Rattlesnake Island”. When the Army Corps of Engineers dredged the Intracoastal Waterway in the 1960s to create a channel, it cut the original landmass in two, creating the smaller public beach area known today as Snake Island.

The views allow you to see the layout of the waterways, boats, docks, and coastal homes — a beautiful mix of nature and Florida coastal living. It was a wonderful and educational cruise, both for my friends and also for myself.

Later in the day, with about 2–3 hours left before sunset, we made a spontaneous decision to continue our adventure to Caspersen Wild Beach. We left Snake Island and headed through the calm South Venice waterways toward Lemon Bay Channel, 30 minutes down the channel and 6 miles from Venice Bay, we arrive at Pavel’s Secret Spot, which until October 2024 was a hidden part of Caspersen Wild Beach and one of my favorite places: Caspersen Laguna.

This spot has always been one of those quiet treasures I preferred to share only with special guests—nothing more. But after Hurricane Milton, everything changed. The storm caused heavy damage, clearing the vegetation and opening the shoreline directly toward Lemon Bay Channel. What was once a secluded hideaway is now a wide, sandy beach that anyone passing by can recognize.

Before the disaster in October 2024, this place was sheltered by trees, palms, and thick coastal shrubs. It felt private, almost untouched. Now, the landscape is completely transformed, but there’s still something special about visiting a place shaped by nature’s power and renewal.

The sun started dropping behind the Gulf of America and created the perfect golden light to finish our day. It was the kind of afternoon that gently slows time down — peaceful, natural, and beautifully quiet.

Useppa Island is one of the most fascinating and exclusive places in Southwest Florida. Every time I take guests around it, the trip becomes a blend of history, nature, and modern island living. Hidden in Pine Island Sound—just north of Captiva and west of Pine Island—Useppa is a private island with a story stretching back thousands of years. Today, it offers a unique mix of preserved history, wild beauty, and a small community living quietly in paradise.

Useppa Island has been home to people far longer than many visitors realize. Archaeological evidence shows that the Caloosa (Calusa) people lived here for centuries, using the island as a seasonal or permanent settlement. Shell middens, artifacts, and burial sites reveal a complex society that thrived on fishing, trade, and life along the estuary.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Useppa became known as a private retreat for wealthy industrialists. It was owned and developed by Barron Collier, a Florida pioneer who contributed heavily to the development of Southwest Florida. Useppa soon gained a reputation as a quiet island escape for families, fishermen, and explorers.

Milton Pass was created by Hurricane Milton on October 9-10, 2024, cutting a channel through the barrier island at the south end of Manasota Key and divided into two parts of Stump Pass Beach State Park.

Looking back at history, where Milton Pass is now, is where Stump Pass was in the late 1800s.

At a meeting of the Charlotte County Commissioners, officials recommended against allowing two passes on the same stretch of Manasota Key.

The new pass crosses Stump Pass Beach State Park, connecting the Gulf of Mexico and Lemon Bay, after Hurricane Milton struck the southwest coast of Florida on October 9-10.

County consultants believe the pass should not remain.

After reviewing the recommendations presented by the county consultants, I must respectfully disagree with their position on the proposed closure of Milton Pass. The consultants’ findings appear to lack sufficient field-based data and do not adequately account for the local hydrodynamic and ecological conditions observed in this area.

Based on my extensive experience operating in these coastal waters, Milton Pass plays a significant role in maintaining natural water circulation and supporting healthy estuarine habitats. Restricting or closing the pass could lead to reduced water exchange, sediment buildup, and potential negative impacts on marine life and water quality.

I strongly recommend that any management decisions be based on comprehensive environmental assessments that incorporate on-site data, long-term tidal studies, and consultation with local professionals who have direct operational knowledge of these waterways.

I have not been able to find the names of the so-called “county consultants” or any educational credentials supporting their recommendations. Closing Milton Pass, in my opinion, would be a serious mistake. It would do little to protect our environment and would not significantly affect the natural tidal flow in our local waterways. Even more concerning, this would be an extremely expensive project, one that could easily be destroyed by the next hurricane, leaving us with wasted resources and lost opportunity.

Our community deserves solutions that are both effective and sustainable—investments that enhance recreational opportunities while preserving the natural beauty and vitality of this incredible place. Rather than pursuing short-term fixes like closing Milton Pass, let’s focus on projects that truly make a lasting difference and respect the resilience of nature.

The coastline around Manasota Key, Milton Pass, Stump Pass, and Ski Alley (Petterson Cut) represents one of the most dynamic and ecologically important areas along Florida’s Gulf Coast. For years, I’ve explored Stump Pass Beach State Park, observing how tides, winds, and storms continually reshape this natural landscape.

In 2024, Hurricane Milton opened a new waterway now called Milton Pass, between Manasota Key and Knight Island. This newly formed inlet has changed local currents and sediment patterns, influencing both the environment and navigation in the area. It’s a living example of how coastal systems evolve — sometimes overnight — through natural forces.

Stump Pass Beach State Park has long served as a protective buffer for wildlife, including nesting sea turtles, shorebirds, manatees, and a variety of marine species. The park’s beaches, mangroves, and seagrass beds are essential habitats that support the health of the entire Charlotte Harbor estuary.

My goal is to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this fragile ecosystem. Preserving water quality, limiting boat traffic in shallow areas at high speed – like Ski Alley, and supporting coastal restoration projects can help maintain the balance that nature has created here over centuries.

This place — shaped by wind, waves, and time — reminds us that the best environmental protection begins with understanding and respect for the natural processes that sustain it.

Statement from Captain Pavel

As a professional boat captain and long-time observer of our coastal waterways, I respectfully disagree with the conclusions presented by the county consultants regarding the proposed closure of Milton Pass. Based on years of direct experience navigating these local channels, I believe their analysis does not fully reflect the dynamic nature of our coastal ecosystem or the vital role Milton Pass plays in water circulation, fish migration, and local recreation.

Closing Milton Pass would not only disrupt natural tidal flow but could also negatively affect marine life, water quality, and the livelihoods that depend on eco-tourism and sustainable boating. I encourage decision-makers to seek more comprehensive environmental studies and input from those who work on the water every day before making irreversible changes to this area.

There’s something truly magical about spotting dolphins gliding beside your boat, leaping in the wake, or surfacing to greet you with a splash. Southwest Florida is one of the best regions in the country to see these playful marine mammals in their natural environment. With calm Gulf waters, scenic bays, and plenty of fish-rich estuaries, dolphins thrive here year-round.

As a local boat captain and nature guide, I’ve spent countless hours exploring these waters—and I’d like to share my favorite dolphin-viewing locations with you.

If you’re planning a private dolphin tour or simply looking for the best spots to experience nature up close, here are five of the top places in Southwest Florida to see dolphins from your boat.

1. Lemon Bay & Gasparilla Pass

Lemon Bay is one of the most reliable places to see dolphins up close. The calm, protected waters are full of fish, which attract pods of dolphins feeding near mangroves and sandy shoals. It’s not unusual to see them leaping just off the bow or riding your boat’s wake as you cruise between Englewood Beach and Gasparilla Pass. Its secluded nature makes it one of the most peaceful and natural dolphin habitats in the region. As you cruise along the coastline, you’ll often see pods of bottlenose dolphins playing, feeding, or surfacing right beside the boat.

The calm, shallow waters around Cayo Costa are perfect for spotting marine life. Dolphins here often travel close to shore, following schools of fish near the mangroves and grass flats. It’s an ideal location for both dolphin watching and shelling, making it a favorite stop on many private boat tours.

Dolphins often follow along the shoreline, especially on the Gulf side where the water is crystal clear. It’s common to see them jumping in the surf while you anchor nearby for a beach break.

2. Stump Pass & Ski Alley

If you’re looking for one of the most exciting and peaceful ways to see wild dolphins in Southwest Florida, join Captain Pavel for a scenic boat trip through Stump Pass and Ski Alley — two of the best dolphin-viewing areas along the Gulf Coast!

Gulf of America & Stump Pass at Ski Alley, Florida Gulf Discovery LLC

Leaving from Lemon Bay, the adventure begins as we head toward Stump Pass, a beautiful natural waterway connecting the bay to the Gulf of Mexico. The calm, clear water here is a favorite playground for local dolphin pods. Often, you’ll see them swimming alongside the boat, surfacing just a few feet away. It’s an unforgettable sight — dolphins jumping, playing, and sometimes even racing in our wake!

Next, we cruise through Ski Alley, a long, sheltered stretch of water that’s perfect for spotting more dolphins, manatees, and coastal birds. Surrounded by mangrove islands and white sandy shores, this area offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.

3. Boca Grande Pass

Known as one of the deepest natural inlets in Florida, Boca Grande Pass is famous for its incredible marine activity — and not just for tarpon fishing. The deep blue waters attract dolphins year-round, who chase baitfish stirred up by the strong tides.

Boca Grande Pass and Lighthouse, Dolphins site

At the southern tip of Gasparilla Island, this scenic pass is a hotspot for dolphin activity. The strong currents bring plenty of fish, drawing pods of dolphins that love to show off near passing boats. You may even spot them alongside tarpon fishermen during the summer season.

As you cruise through the Pass or along the Gasparilla Island shoreline, it’s common to see multiple pods of dolphins at once. They often leap in your wake, surf alongside the boat, or circle near the jetties. The backdrop of the Boca Grande lighthouse adds to the beauty of the experience, making it a must-see destination for dolphin lovers.

4. Cayo Costa Island

Just north of Captiva Island lies Cayo Costa — an untouched barrier island accessible only by boat. Its secluded nature makes it one of the most peaceful and natural dolphin habitats in the region. As you cruise along the coastline, you’ll often see pods of bottlenose dolphins playing, feeding, or surfacing right beside the boat.

Cayo Costa Gulf Beach with Florida Gulf Discovery LLC

5. Captiva & Sanibel Islands

Between Pine Island, Captiva, and Sanibel lies the Pine Island Sound Aquatic Preserve, a pristine estuary filled with wildlife. These waters are home to dozens of resident dolphin pods that are incredibly social and often approach boats out of curiosity.

North Captiva Island and Pine Island Sound, Florida Gulf Discovery LLC

These barrier islands are legendary for shelling and dolphin watching. Cruise along the Intracoastal Waterway between Sanibel and Captiva or around Blind Pass — dolphins are almost guaranteed. They often swim right next to boats, delighting passengers with their friendly curiosity and acrobatics.

This area combines lush mangrove islands, seagrass meadows, and calm bays — the perfect environment for spotting dolphins, manatees, and even sea turtles.
A private tour through Pine Island Sound is truly a wildlife lover’s dream — peaceful, scenic, and full of surprises.
