The first time I truly discovered the beauty of Southwest Florida’s waters was when I moved near Port Charlotte and started exploring the coast by boat. One of the very first places that captured my attention was a narrow stretch of water locals call Ski Alley, located at the southern end of Manasota Key near Englewood, Florida.

This area quickly became one of my favorite places along the Gulf Coast. Calm waters, untouched shoreline, and incredible wildlife make it a hidden paradise that many visitors never fully experience unless they see it from the water.

At the southern tip of Manasota Key lies Stump Pass Beach State Park, a beautiful barrier island landscape where a narrow strip of land separates Lemon Bay from the Gulf of Mexico. The park protects miles of natural coastline filled with sand dunes, mangroves, wildlife habitats, and quiet beaches.

From the water, the scenery is breathtaking. The contrast between the calm waters of Lemon Bay and the open Gulf creates a unique environment that feels peaceful and wild at the same time. It’s one of those rare places where you can truly feel connected to nature.

After Hurricane Milton, the geography of the area changed dramatically. The storm created a new channel that locals now refer to as Milton Pass, dividing the park into two sections. Today, the southern portion of the park is accessible only by boat, making it an even more special destination for those exploring the area by water.

Ski Alley is a narrow stretch of Lemon Bay known for its smooth, protected waters. For decades, locals have used this natural water corridor for water skiing, boating, and recreation. Because the water here is usually calm and shielded from strong Gulf waves, it became the perfect place for skiers and boaters looking for ideal conditions.

Over time, the nickname “Ski Alley” became a part of local boating culture. Even today, boaters passing through the area know exactly what you mean when you mention this unique stretch of water.

But Ski Alley is more than just a place for water sports—it’s also one of the most scenic waterways along the Southwest Florida coast.

Every time I bring guests into this area, we are reminded that the waters of Lemon Bay are full of life.

It’s very common to see dolphins swimming alongside the boat, sometimes riding the wake and playing in the waves. Manatees often appear quietly near the mangroves or shallow grass flats, slowly moving through the warm waters. Above us, ospreys circle the sky searching for fish, occasionally diving dramatically into the bay.

These wildlife encounters make every trip unique and unforgettable.

The protected waters of Lemon Bay and the surrounding mangrove ecosystems create one of the richest coastal habitats in Southwest Florida.

Our first stop was in the No Wake zone of the Intracoastal Waterway near Cape Haze. Even after the recent storms, when dolphins have been less active than usual, we were lucky to encounter a few. Watching them surface and move peacefully through the calm water is always a special experience.

Our second stop took us just outside Stump Pass, about one mile into the Gulf of America. The open water, fresh sea breeze, and endless horizon created a true feeling of freedom on the water.

As we re-entered Stump Pass, a small pod of dolphins appeared directly in our path, swimming gracefully alongside the boat. Moments like this make every tour unique and unforgettable.

Our third stop was just before Milton Pass along Ski Alley at Stump Pass Beach State Park, a beautiful stretch of land accessible only by boat.

The sand was clean and natural, the water calm, and the atmosphere peaceful — exactly what Southwest Florida boating is all about. We anchored for about an hour while my guests walked along the pure white sand and searched for shark teeth, one of the favorite activities in this area. The shoreline, reshaped by recent storms, is now more open and easily reachable by boat.

In the evening, we returned toward Stump Pass to watch the sunset. The sky transformed into brilliant shades of orange and pink, reflecting beautifully across the calm water — a classic Southwest Florida sunset that never disappoints.

As darkness settled in, we cruised safely back home with navigation lights on, passing through Lemon Bay, the Long Channel of the Intracoastal Waterway near Cape Haze, and into Gasparilla Sound before returning to Eldred’s Marina in full dark, smooth and safe.

At the end of the trip, my guests told me that although they had been in Florida for three months, this was the best day they experienced here.

And that is exactly why I love what I do.

When I first began navigating boats around Venice, Lemon Bay, and Gasparilla Sound, I kept asking myself the same question:
Why are some places so narrow between the ICW markers, while right next to them the water is wide, flat, and extremely shallow?

At first it didn’t make sense. The channel felt like a thin ribbon running through a giant water world of sandbars, grass flats, and open bays. I learned quickly to respect the markers—one step outside, and you were in ankle-deep water.

One day I met several older local boaters and fishermen, the kind of people who spent their whole lives on these waters. They smiled when I asked why the ICW felt so tight and unnatural in some places.
Their answer opened a window into the history of this coastline—an entire era of waterway construction, dredging, changes in geography, and a time before the modern Intracoastal Waterway even existed.

By the mid-20th century, the federal government finally committed to the project. In the 1960s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began a major effort to connect the natural waterways into a single navigable channel.

The project was authorized under a series of federal laws, including the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1945 and subsequent amendments. These directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to build and maintain some 160 miles of waterway, including this stretch, to a navigable depth of 9 feet (plus some over-depth allowance) for safe navigation.

When I first started boating here, I realized how easy it is to get into trouble if you don’t know the area. The bays are wide and beautiful, but very shallow. The ICW changes everything. As long as you follow the markers, you’re safe—even if it’s your first time on these waters. And at night, those illuminated markers guide you through places you could never cross in the dark without them. The ICW truly makes exploring this coastline possible for everyone.

This part of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) near Cape Haze connects Lemon Bay with Gasparilla Bay—a beautiful but busy stretch of water. The posted Slow Speed – Minimum Wake Zone isn’t just a random rule; it plays an important role in keeping both boaters and marine life safe.

Here’s what I explain to my guests on every trip:

1. Boater Safety

This narrow, high-traffic area sees a mix of vessels—everything from large motorboats to kayaks and paddleboarders. Slowing down helps everyone stay safe by improving reaction time and preventing dangerous collisions in these tight conditions.

Florida’s waterways are home to the gentle manatee, an endangered species that often swims just below the surface. Slower speeds greatly reduce the risk of boat strikes, one of the leading causes of manatee injuries and deaths.

A large boat wake can do serious damage—eroding shorelines, rocking docks, and harming moored boats. Keeping speeds low helps preserve the waterfront and local habitat.

4. Environmental Preservation

Slow-speed zones also protect delicate mangroves, seagrass beds, and marine ecosystems. These habitats are crucial for fish, birds, and other wildlife that make this region so vibrant and unique.

There’s another reason why the No Wake Zone in Cape Haze Sound has long captured curiosity. Official information about this particular area is limited—perhaps intentionally—to protect what some locals refer to as one of Florida’s great maritime mysteries, hidden from the public for nearly two centuries.

When traveling through a “Slow Speed – Minimum Wake” zone, vessels must stay completely off-plane and settled in the water, creating only a small ripple behind. If you see an “Idle Speed – No Wake” sign, that means operating at the absolute minimum speed necessary to maintain steerage.

So, the next time you’re exploring Cape Haze by boat and find yourself going 5 mph, remember—it’s not just a rule, it’s a way to protect Florida’s natural beauty and keep everyone safe on the water.

Moving to Florida’s West Coast changed my life in ways I never imagined. What began as a new chapter with my husband quickly became a love story with nature itself — with the turquoise waters, gentle breezes, and endless sunsets that color the Gulf Coast. Every walk, every boat trip, every shimmering horizon has left a mark on my heart.

My first encounter with Florida was two and a half years ago, when my husband and I decided to move here. It was love at first sight. We settled on the Gulf Cove area of Port Charlotte — a place that instantly felt like home.

Of course, the first place my husband took me was Manasota Key, Lemon Bay, and Stump Pass. We walked along the Gulf shore from Chadwick Park at Englewood Beach to Stump Pass (before Milton), and I still can’t fully describe how wonderful it was. The turquoise water shimmered under the bright sun, the air was warm and soft, and beside me was my loved one — and a dear friend we hadn’t seen in a long time. It was the end of March, but it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t want to go for a swim!

Exploring by Boat

Our way back led us through Stump Pass State Park, where the view of Sky Alley opened before us — calm, vast, and endlessly beautiful. This quickly became one of our favorite places.

North Captiva Gulf Beach, with Florida Gulf Discovery LLC

Later, when we had the chance to travel by boat, a new chapter of discovery began. We explored the most breathtaking places along our coast: Gasparilla Pass and Little Gasparilla Island, where we love to fish and watch dolphins and ospreys dance in the sky; Boca Grande Pass, a historic site crowned by its charming lighthouse; Cayo Costa Island, wild and serene; and Cabbage Key, with its cozy restaurant and wonderful cuisine.

So many unforgettable moments are tied to these places — moments filled with laughter, quiet wonder, and the feeling that life here, on Florida’s West Coast, truly is a piece of paradise.

Every day here feels like a small miracle — the kind that unfolds quietly, in the rhythm of the waves and the glow of the sunset. Florida’s West Coast has taught me to slow down, to listen to the sea, and to appreciate the beauty in simple moments. It’s more than just a place to live; it’s where my heart found peace, where love and nature meet, and where the sun truly meets the sea.
