Some Stories Don’t End When You Leave the Water

Some stories stay with you for years.

Others follow you home.

This story began nearly a year ago near the Historic Placida Trestle, where two curious dolphins turned an ordinary morning of fishing into one of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters I had ever experienced.

At the time, I believed it was simply one of those rare moments that every captain is lucky enough to witness once in a lifetime.

I was wrong.

Nearly a year later, while spending another beautiful day with my wife, Elena, at Boca Grande Sandbar, something happened that brought those memories rushing back.

After nearly an hour riding my e-foil without seeing a single dolphin, I was ready to call it a day. As I pulled the board back toward the boat, a lone dolphin quietly appeared beneath the hull.

What happened over the next thirty minutes reminded me immediately of that morning at Placida Trestle.

But the most surprising part of this story didn’t happen on the water.

It happened later that evening, after I returned home.

While reviewing Elena’s GoPro footage, I discovered something beneath the surface that I had completely missed while I was swimming beside the boat.

That discovery changed the way I remembered both encounters forever.

It Began at Placida Trestle

The first chapter of this story began almost a year before the events at Boca Grande Sandbar.

It was one of those peaceful Southwest Florida mornings that every captain appreciates. The water was almost perfectly calm, there was very little boat traffic, and only a light breeze disturbed the surface. I had anchored near the Historic Placida Trestle and had been fishing for nearly two hours.

Everything around me was quiet.

Then something moved the boat.

Not a passing wake.

Not the wind.

A slow, deliberate push.

Then another.

I remember standing there for a moment, trying to understand what could be moving the boat. Curious, I walked toward the bow and looked into the clear green water.

Instead of changing current or floating debris, I saw two dark shapes circling beneath the boat.

Seconds later, they surfaced.

Two bottlenose dolphins.

At first, I thought they were simply passing by.

But they stayed.

As I continued watching, I realized they weren’t interested in me or the boat itself. They kept circling the anchor rode, gently rubbing against it with their bodies as if it had become their favorite underwater toy.

The moment they noticed me standing on the bow, the entire encounter changed.

One dolphin burst out of the water only a few feet from the boat.

Then the second followed.

Water exploded across the deck as they landed.

For the next fifteen to twenty minutes, they entertained me with one incredible display after another. They circled beneath the boat, surfaced beside me, disappeared into the green water, and then returned with another powerful leap.

Every time I thought the show had ended, another jump followed.

The final moments are still vivid in my memory.

Each dolphin launched high out of the water one last time before landing with a powerful slap of its tail, sending another shower of spray into the air.

Then, almost as suddenly as they had arrived, they disappeared.

The water became calm again.

The only evidence they had ever been there was the gentle rocking of the boat and a memory I knew I would never forget.

At the time, I believed that was the end of the story.

I had no idea it was only the beginning.

A Familiar Visitor Returns

Nearly a year passed before I experienced anything like that unforgettable morning at Placida Trestle.

Two weeks ago, Elena and I decided to spend a relaxing weekday at Boca Grande Sandbar, one of our favorite places in Southwest Florida. The weather couldn’t have been much better. Warm sunshine, light wind, calm emerald-green water, and just enough boats to make the sandbar feel alive without feeling crowded.

If I had to rate the day, I would have given it an easy eight out of ten.

For almost an hour I enjoyed riding my e-foil around the sandbar. As always, I kept watching the water, hoping a dolphin might appear.

Nothing.

Not a single dorsal fin.

Not even in the distance.

Eventually, I accepted that today simply wasn’t going to be a dolphin day.

I returned to the boat and started pulling the e-foil back aboard.

Then everything changed.

As I pulled the e-foil toward the boat, I noticed a dolphin swimming directly toward me.

A moment later it disappeared beneath the hull.

Curious, I slipped back into the water and slowly swam toward the stern where the anchor rode disappeared into the sandy bottom.

Suddenly the dolphin appeared again, less than two feet away.

Everything happened so quickly that I barely had time to think before it disappeared beneath the surface once more.

Everything was happening so fast that there was little time to think.

But one thought kept returning.

Was this simply another curious dolphin?

Or had it noticed me riding the e-foil only minutes earlier and decided to come over and investigate?

Of course, I’ll never know.

Maybe it was only my imagination.

Or maybe nature still has a few mysteries we aren’t meant to explain.

Almost immediately I noticed something strangely familiar.

The dolphin didn’t seem interested in me.

It didn’t seem interested in the e-foil.

It didn’t seem interested in the boat.

It seemed completely fascinated by the anchor rode.

Exactly like the dolphins I had watched nearly a year earlier near the Historic Placida Trestle.

I called to Elena.

“Grab the GoPro!”

I had a feeling this was one of those moments that might never happen again.

Whatever was happening, I wanted to capture it before it was over.

Elena stayed aboard the boat while I remained in the water.

From where I floated, I couldn’t always see what the dolphin was doing beneath the surface. The water was about five feet deep, and every few seconds it disappeared from view.

But I could feel it.

Each time the dolphin nudged or tugged on the anchor rode, the boat slowly rotated around the anchor.

It was almost as if the dolphin had decided the rope was the most interesting object in the entire bay.

For nearly thirty minutes the game continued.

The dolphin circled the boat.

It circled me.

It returned to the anchor rode again and again.

Every movement seemed calm, curious, and completely unhurried.

Then, just as quietly as it had begun, the encounter came to an end.

The dolphin made two slow circles around the boat.

It rolled gently onto its back beneath the clear water and remained almost motionless for a few seconds.

Then it slowly rolled upright again.

Without another splash.

Without another circle.

Without any sign that the encounter had ever happened.

It disappeared into the clear waters of Gasparilla Sound.

I stayed in the water for another minute, hoping it might return.

It never did.

The Rope

Later that afternoon, Elena and I returned to Gasparilla Marina.

Like every trip, I began my usual routine. I washed the boat, flushed the Mercury engines with fresh water, rinsed the deck, cleaned the equipment, and prepared everything for the next adventure.

Finally, I pulled the anchor aboard.

As I started coiling the anchor rode, something immediately caught my attention.

Several sections of the rope had unusual marks.

At first, I didn’t think much about it.

Then I looked more closely.

The rope was only about a year old.

I remembered buying it at Walmart before one of my trips.

Standing there on the dock, I quietly blamed the rope itself.

“Cheap rope.”

“Cheap quality.”

I even remember shaking my head and thinking,

“Never again.”

As far as I was concerned, the mystery had already been solved.

The rope had simply worn out sooner than it should have.

I finished cleaning the boat, secured everything for the night, and drove home.

I honestly believed the story had ended there.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The Clue I Almost Missed

That evening, after arriving home, I unloaded the GoPro footage from the day and began organizing the files on my computer.

Like most days on the water, there were plenty of short clips to review.

At first, I wasn’t looking for anything unusual.

I simply wanted to relive another beautiful day at Boca Grande Sandbar.

Then one video caught my attention.

It was the footage Elena had recorded while I was in the water with the dolphin.

I watched it once.

Then I watched it again.

Something didn’t look quite right.

Curious, I replayed the clip in slow motion.

Then frame by frame.

Only then did I notice something I had completely missed while I was floating beside the boat.

The dolphin wasn’t only rubbing against the anchor rode.

Several times it gently took the rope into its mouth.

I immediately thought about the strange marks I had seen on the rope only a few hours earlier.

Suddenly everything made sense.

The rope wasn’t damaged because it was poor quality.

The marks had been left by the dolphin.

I couldn’t help but smile.

Only a short time earlier I had blamed Walmart for selling a cheap anchor rode.

Now I found myself thanking one curious dolphin for leaving behind one final surprise.

Without Elena recording those moments, I probably would never have known what had really happened beneath the surface.

Sometimes the most important part of a story isn’t what you see while you’re living it.

It’s what you discover after you get home.

Some Mysteries Don’t Need Answers

People often ask me what makes Southwest Florida so special.

Of course, it’s easy to talk about the white-sand beaches, the barrier islands, the clear Gulf waters, and the incredible wildlife.

But for me, that’s only part of the answer.

The real magic lies in the unexpected.

It’s found in the moments you could never plan, never schedule, and never guarantee.

A curious dolphin.

A quiet morning.

An ordinary anchor rope that unexpectedly became part of an unforgettable story.

Did the dolphin remember my boat from nearly a year earlier?

Did it simply enjoy playing with the anchor rode?

Or was I fortunate enough to witness one of those rare moments that nature offers without explanation?

I’ll probably never know.

And honestly…

I don’t need to.

Some experiences are more meaningful because they remain a mystery.

They remind us that no matter how many days we spend on the water, nature always has another surprise waiting just beyond the next island, around the next sandbar, or beneath the next wave.

That’s one of the reasons I continue exploring the waters of Southwest Florida.

Not because I expect every day to be extraordinary.

But because every new day on the water holds the possibility of becoming another story worth telling.

Today’s Highlight

After an afternoon enjoying my e-foil at Boca Grande Sandbar, I anchored my boat in the calm, shallow waters of Gasparilla Sound. Within minutes, a curious bottlenose dolphin appeared beside the boat. Instead of simply passing by, it stayed nearby, swimming slowly around the anchor rode and returning several times to investigate it. Encounters like this cannot be planned—they are gifts from nature and reminders of why every day on Southwest Florida’s waters is unique.

Useppa Island is one of the most fascinating and exclusive places in Southwest Florida. Every time I take guests around it, the trip becomes a blend of history, nature, and modern island living. Hidden in Pine Island Sound—just north of Captiva and west of Pine Island—Useppa is a private island with a story stretching back thousands of years. Today, it offers a unique mix of preserved history, wild beauty, and a small community living quietly in paradise.

A Brief History of Useppa Island

Useppa Island has been home to people far longer than many visitors realize. Archaeological evidence shows that the Caloosa (Calusa) people lived here for centuries, using the island as a seasonal or permanent settlement. Shell middens, artifacts, and burial sites reveal a complex society that thrived on fishing, trade, and life along the estuary.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Useppa became known as a private retreat for wealthy industrialists. It was owned and developed by Barron Collier, a Florida pioneer who contributed heavily to the development of Southwest Florida. Useppa soon gained a reputation as a quiet island escape for families, fishermen, and explorers.

During World War II, the island played a strategic role as a training base for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the predecessor of the CIA. Military teams trained in small-boat operations, navigation, and intelligence skills right on the waters we cruise today.

One of the island’s most interesting attractions is the Barbara Sumwalt Museum. Although the island is private, the museum offers a deep look into Useppa’s long timeline:

The island also hires staff for maintenance, hospitality, landscaping, and marine operations. This creates a small but dedicated workforce, many of whom have deep knowledge of the area.

How the Island Works: Utilities & Infrastructure

Living on Useppa requires a unique set of utilities that must function independently from the mainland.

Electricity is delivered to Useppa Island, Florida, via an underwater cable from the mainland, a process that began in 1981. Before this, the island relied on local, diesel-powered generators for its electricity.

Useppa Island has modern utilities including electricity, water, and sewer available for its approximately 100 homes and amenities such as an inn and restaurant. The island is private, only accessible by boat, and primarily uses golf carts for transportation.

While details are private, the island is known to rely on:

• • Private water supply, often transported or produced through purification systems
  • Independent power systems supported by generators and modern equipment
  • Septic and wastewater management, maintained to protect the environment
  • Dock delivery services for food, materials, and heavy equipment
  • Ferry and private boat transportation for residents and staff

Everything on the island must be transported by water, which makes the community very self-reliant and organized. The result is a clean, quiet environment with minimal impact on nature.

The Collier Inn Restaurant offers four-star service and products with an atmosphere which promotes a comfortable setting and relaxed conversation. The restaurant on Useppa Island, it is a private island and access is restricted. Non-members can dine at the Collier Inn Restaurant or Tarpon Bar by arriving with Captiva Cruises, being a guest of an island member, or booking an overnight stay.

A new trip to Cabbage Key has been developed and tested by Florida Gulf Discovery LLC.

I call it “The 6-Hour Cabbage Key Trip — From Sunset to Moonrise.”

This experience was inspired by several of my “4-Hour Sunset” trips. Since Cabbage Key is so close to Boca Grande Pass, it would be a shame not to visit this special place and share it with guests.

Now, let me describe this beautiful route.

Depending on the sunset time, we depart from Eldred’s Marina about 2-3 hours before sunset. Heading south, we pass under the Boca Grande Bridge, with the Boca Grande Sandbar lying just to the west. From there, we cross Gasparilla Sound toward Boca Grande Pass, where Pine Island Sound begins.

In Gasparilla Sound, we often encounter playful dolphins. After passing Three Sisters Island, we enter Boca Grande Island through its scenic cove. This stretch—about two miles long—offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the beauty of the island from the water.

Along the way, we pass well-known landmarks such as Boca Grande Bayou, Gasparilla Golf Club, The Outlet Restaurant, The Gasparilla Inn, The Pink Elephant, Eagle Grille & Miller’s Dockside, and Whidden’s Marina (founded in 1926 and now listed for $17.5 million).

We then continue to Boca Grande Pass, overlooking the vast Gulf of America, to witness a cosmic sunset—a perfect time for photos and memories of the incredible views.

As soon as the sun dips below the horizon, our trip continues along Cayo Costa Island in Pine Island Sound. During this time, we watch the sky transform through a breathtaking range of twilight colors. About half an hour later, we arrive at Cabbage Key Marina.

After docking, we take a short walk and climb the historic Cabbage Key Water Tower, originally built in the 1930s and standing 60 feet tall. From the top, the glowing sky creates unforgettable photo opportunities and lasting memories.

Next, it’s time to visit the Cabbage Key Restaurant, a charming place with a story that began in the early 1900s. Enjoy a delicious dinner and a glass of fine wine surrounded by the island’s old Florida charm.

After that is finished we get onto the boat, moving and looking for the moon. The time difference between the months and the position of the moon can change. But that doesn’t stop us from uncredible fillings if viewing. The combination of time spent on the water between the islands in the darkness and calm waters is amazing fillings.

Finally, guided by the silver light of the moon, we return to Eldred’s Marina.
Six hours pass like a dream — just as my guests always say.

A Curious Moment on the Water

Every day on the water brings something new — and this time, even the dolphins decided to join the fun!

During one of our tours in Southwest Florida, I noticed something unusual while catching snappers near Lemon Bay. In the picture, you can see snappers #1 and #3 from the bottom with some marks left on skin by a dolphin. These playful marine mammals were not hunting — they were simply playing with the fish I caught and released!

Be patient and let the dolphin take the line. Don’t pull too hard; let the dolphin pull with tension to avoid breaking the line. When it has pulled about 60-90 meters of line out, the dolphin will release the toy.

Dolphins: The Curious Minds of the Sea

Dolphins are among the most intelligent and social creatures in the ocean. They love to investigate anything that moves — from boats to fish and sometimes even our fishing lines. Marine researchers have observed dolphins gently tossing or nudging fish, seemingly just for fun or out of curiosity.

When they interact like this, it shows how aware and playful these animals are. They’re not just hunters — they’re thinkers, explorers, and part of a complex marine community that makes our Gulf waters so fascinating.

Respecting Marine Life on Every Trip
