Instead, I experienced one of the most unforgettable dolphin encounters of my life.</figcaption></figure>
<p>Some stories stay with you for years.</p>
<p>Others follow you home.</p>
<p>This story began nearly a year ago near the Historic Placida Trestle, where two curious dolphins turned an ordinary morning of fishing into one of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters I had ever experienced.</p>
<p>At the time, I believed it was simply one of those rare moments that every captain is lucky enough to witness once in a lifetime.</p>
<p>I was wrong.</p>
<p>Nearly a year later, while spending another beautiful day with my wife, Elena, at Boca Grande Sandbar, something happened that brought those memories rushing back.</p>
<figure id="attachment_11299" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11299" style="width: 700px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://youtu.be/0zX1MeLU7wE?si=1zXV7N9kQ4bgBIuf"><img decoding="async" class="500 500 wp-image-11299" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphins-playing-anchor-rode-placida-trestle-boca-grande-sandbar-youtube-thumbnail-500x333.jpg" alt="YouTube thumbnail showing a bottlenose dolphin holding Captain Pavel's anchor rode near the Historic Placida Trestle, with an e-foil adventure at Boca Grande Sandbar in Southwest Florida." width="700" height="467" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphins-playing-anchor-rode-placida-trestle-boca-grande-sandbar-youtube-thumbnail-500x333.jpg 500w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphins-playing-anchor-rode-placida-trestle-boca-grande-sandbar-youtube-thumbnail-300x200.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphins-playing-anchor-rode-placida-trestle-boca-grande-sandbar-youtube-thumbnail-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphins-playing-anchor-rode-placida-trestle-boca-grande-sandbar-youtube-thumbnail-768x512.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphins-playing-anchor-rode-placida-trestle-boca-grande-sandbar-youtube-thumbnail-128x84.jpg 128w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphins-playing-anchor-rode-placida-trestle-boca-grande-sandbar-youtube-thumbnail-125x83.jpg 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphins-playing-anchor-rode-placida-trestle-boca-grande-sandbar-youtube-thumbnail.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-11299" class="wp-caption-text">The thumbnail for my YouTube video that inspired Captain&#8217;s Journey #002, featuring the unforgettable dolphin encounter at Boca Grande Sandbar and the earlier experience near the Historic Placida Trestle.</figcaption></figure>
<p>After nearly an hour riding my e-foil without seeing a single dolphin, I was ready to call it a day. As I pulled the board back toward the boat, a lone dolphin quietly appeared beneath the hull.</p>
<p>What happened over the next thirty minutes reminded me immediately of that morning at Placida Trestle.</p>
<p>But the most surprising part of this story didn&#8217;t happen on the water.</p>
<p>It happened later that evening, after I returned home.</p>
<p>While reviewing Elena&#8217;s GoPro footage, I discovered something beneath the surface that I had completely missed while I was swimming beside the boat.</p>
<p>That discovery changed the way I remembered both encounters forever.</p>
<hr>
<h1>It Began at Placida Trestle</h1>
<p>The first chapter of this story began almost a year before the events at Boca Grande Sandbar.</p>
<p>It was one of those peaceful Southwest Florida mornings that every captain appreciates. The water was almost perfectly calm, there was very little boat traffic, and only a light breeze disturbed the surface. I had anchored near the Historic Placida Trestle and had been fishing for nearly two hours.</p>
<figure id="attachment_11300" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11300" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-11300 size-Pavel 500" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/historic-placida-trestle-gasparilla-sound-aerial-view-500x281.png" alt="Drone view of the Historic Placida Trestle, Gasparilla Sound, and surrounding sandbars in Placida, Florida." width="500" height="281" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/historic-placida-trestle-gasparilla-sound-aerial-view-500x281.png 500w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/historic-placida-trestle-gasparilla-sound-aerial-view-300x169.png 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/historic-placida-trestle-gasparilla-sound-aerial-view-1024x576.png 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/historic-placida-trestle-gasparilla-sound-aerial-view-768x432.png 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/historic-placida-trestle-gasparilla-sound-aerial-view-1536x864.png 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/historic-placida-trestle-gasparilla-sound-aerial-view-125x70.png 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/historic-placida-trestle-gasparilla-sound-aerial-view.png 1672w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-11300" class="wp-caption-text">An aerial view of the Historic Placida Trestle and the shallow waters of Gasparilla Sound in Placida, Florida. It was here that an ordinary morning of fishing became the beginning of an unforgettable dolphin story.</figcaption></figure>
<p>Everything around me was quiet.</p>
<p>Then something moved the boat.</p>
<p>Not a passing wake.</p>
<p>Not the wind.</p>
<p>A slow, deliberate push.</p>
<p>Then another.</p>
<p>I remember standing there for a moment, trying to understand what could be moving the boat. Curious, I walked toward the bow and looked into the clear green water.</p>
<figure id="attachment_10982" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-10982" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-Pavel 500 wp-image-10982" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/two-bottlenose-dolphins-boca-grande-pass-500x281.jpg" alt="Two wild bottlenose dolphins swimming together near Boca Grande Pass in Southwest Florida." width="500" height="281" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/two-bottlenose-dolphins-boca-grande-pass-500x281.jpg 500w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/two-bottlenose-dolphins-boca-grande-pass-300x169.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/two-bottlenose-dolphins-boca-grande-pass-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/two-bottlenose-dolphins-boca-grande-pass-768x432.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/two-bottlenose-dolphins-boca-grande-pass-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/two-bottlenose-dolphins-boca-grande-pass-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/two-bottlenose-dolphins-boca-grande-pass-125x70.jpg 125w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-10982" class="wp-caption-text">A pair of wild bottlenose dolphins swimming together in the turquoise waters near Boca Grande Pass, Florida.</figcaption></figure>
<p>Instead of changing current or floating debris, I saw two dark shapes circling beneath the boat.</p>
<p>Seconds later, they surfaced.</p>
<p>Two bottlenose dolphins.</p>
<p>At first, I thought they were simply passing by.</p>
<p>But they stayed.</p>
<p>As I continued watching, I realized they weren&#8217;t interested in me or the boat itself. They kept circling the anchor rode, gently rubbing against it with their bodies as if it had become their favorite underwater toy.</p>
<p>The moment they noticed me standing on the bow, the entire encounter changed.</p>
<p>One dolphin burst out of the water only a few feet from the boat.</p>
<p>Then the second followed.</p>
<p>Water exploded across the deck as they landed.</p>
<figure id="attachment_11301" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11301" style="width: 400px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-11301" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-jumping-historic-placida-trestle-captain-pavel.png" alt="A bottlenose dolphin leaps from the water beside Captain Pavel's boat while fishing near the Historic Placida Trestle in Placida, Florida." width="400" height="600" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-jumping-historic-placida-trestle-captain-pavel.png 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-jumping-historic-placida-trestle-captain-pavel-200x300.png 200w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-jumping-historic-placida-trestle-captain-pavel-683x1024.png 683w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-jumping-historic-placida-trestle-captain-pavel-768x1152.png 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-jumping-historic-placida-trestle-captain-pavel-83x125.png 83w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-11301" class="wp-caption-text">The moment everything changed. What began as a quiet morning of fishing near the Historic Placida Trestle quickly became one of the most unforgettable dolphin encounters I&#8217;ve ever experienced.</figcaption></figure>
<p>For the next fifteen to twenty minutes, they entertained me with one incredible display after another. They circled beneath the boat, surfaced beside me, disappeared into the green water, and then returned with another powerful leap.</p>
<p>Every time I thought the show had ended, another jump followed.</p>
<p>The final moments are still vivid in my memory.</p>
<p>Each dolphin launched high out of the water one last time before landing with a powerful slap of its tail, sending another shower of spray into the air.</p>
<p>Then, almost as suddenly as they had arrived, they disappeared.</p>
<p>The water became calm again.</p>
<p>The only evidence they had ever been there was the gentle rocking of the boat and a memory I knew I would never forget.</p>
<p>At the time, I believed that was the end of the story.</p>
<p>I had no idea it was only the beginning.</p>

The water remained quiet, and I was beginning to think it simply wasn&#8217;t going to be a dolphin day.</figcaption></figure>
<p>Nearly a year passed before I experienced anything like that unforgettable morning at Placida Trestle.</p>
<p>Two weeks ago, Elena and I decided to spend a relaxing weekday at Boca Grande Sandbar, one of our favorite places in Southwest Florida. The weather couldn&#8217;t have been much better. Warm sunshine, light wind, calm emerald-green water, and just enough boats to make the sandbar feel alive without feeling crowded.</p>
<p>If I had to rate the day, I would have given it an easy eight out of ten.</p>
<p>For almost an hour I enjoyed riding my e-foil around the sandbar. As always, I kept watching the water, hoping a dolphin might appear.</p>

<p>Nothing.</p>
<p>Not a single dorsal fin.</p>
<p>Not even in the distance.</p>
<p>Eventually, I accepted that today simply wasn&#8217;t going to be a dolphin day.</p>
<p>I returned to the boat and started pulling the e-foil back aboard.</p>
<p>Then everything changed.</p>
<p>As I pulled the e-foil toward the boat, I noticed a dolphin swimming directly toward me.</p>

<p>But one thought kept returning.</p>
<p>Was this simply another curious dolphin?</p>
<p>Or had it noticed me riding the e-foil only minutes earlier and decided to come over and investigate?</p>
<p>Of course, I&#8217;ll never know.</p>
<p>Maybe it was only my imagination.</p>
<p>Or maybe nature still has a few mysteries we aren&#8217;t meant to explain.</p>

From here, Captain Pavel departs for private boat tours to Boca Grande, Cayo Costa, Gasparilla Sound, hidden beaches, sandbars, and unforgettable dolphin encounters.</figcaption></figure>
<p>Later that afternoon, Elena and I returned to Gasparilla Marina.</p>
<p>Like every trip, I began my usual routine. I washed the boat, flushed the Mercury engines with fresh water, rinsed the deck, cleaned the equipment, and prepared everything for the next adventure.</p>
<p>Finally, I pulled the anchor aboard.</p>
<p>As I started coiling the anchor rode, something immediately caught my attention.</p>
<p>Several sections of the rope had unusual marks.</p>
<p>At first, I didn&#8217;t think much about it.</p>
<figure id="attachment_11268" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11268" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-11268 size-Pavel-3-2" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/anchor-rode-damage-from-playful-dolphin-500x333.jpg" alt="Close-up of a white anchor rode showing damage caused by repeated interaction with a playful dolphin." width="500" height="333" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/anchor-rode-damage-from-playful-dolphin-500x333.jpg 500w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/anchor-rode-damage-from-playful-dolphin-128x84.jpg 128w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-11268" class="wp-caption-text">A section of anchor rode showing wear after repeated playful interaction with a curious dolphin.</figcaption></figure>
<p>Then I looked more closely.</p>
<p>The rope was only about a year old.</p>
<p>I remembered buying it at Walmart before one of my trips.</p>
<p>Standing there on the dock, I quietly blamed the rope itself.</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Cheap rope.&#8221;</em></p>
<p><em>&#8220;Cheap quality.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>I even remember shaking my head and thinking,</p>
<p><em>&#8220;Never again.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>As far as I was concerned, the mystery had already been solved.</p>
<p>The rope had simply worn out sooner than it should have.</p>
<p>I finished cleaning the boat, secured everything for the night, and drove home.</p>
<p>I honestly believed the story had ended there.</p>
<p>I couldn&#8217;t have been more wrong.</p>

<h1>The Clue I Almost Missed</h1>

<p>That evening, after arriving home, I unloaded the GoPro footage from the day and began organizing the files on my computer.</p>
<p>Like most days on the water, there were plenty of short clips to review.</p>
<p>At first, I wasn&#8217;t looking for anything unusual.</p>
<p>I simply wanted to relive another beautiful day at Boca Grande Sandbar.</p>
<p>Then one video caught my attention.</p>
<p>It was the footage Elena had recorded while I was in the water with the dolphin.</p>
<p>I watched it once.</p>
<p>Then I watched it again.</p>
<p>Something didn&#8217;t look quite right.</p>
<p>Curious, I replayed the clip in slow motion.</p>
<p>Then frame by frame.</p>
<p>Only then did I notice something I had completely missed while I was floating beside the boat.</p>
<p>The dolphin wasn&#8217;t only rubbing against the anchor rode.</p>
<p>Several times it gently took the rope into its mouth.</p>
<p>I immediately thought about the strange marks I had seen on the rope only a few hours earlier.</p>
<p>Suddenly everything made sense.</p>
<p>The rope wasn&#8217;t damaged because it was poor quality.</p>
<p>The marks had been left by the dolphin.</p>
<p>I couldn&#8217;t help but smile.</p>
<p>Only a short time earlier I had blamed Walmart for selling a cheap anchor rode.</p>
<p>Now I found myself thanking one curious dolphin for leaving behind one final surprise.</p>
<p>Without Elena recording those moments, I probably would never have known what had really happened beneath the surface.</p>
<p>Sometimes the most important part of a story isn&#8217;t what you see while you&#8217;re living it.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s what you discover after you get home.</p>

<p>People often ask me what makes Southwest Florida so special.</p>
<p>Of course, it&#8217;s easy to talk about the white-sand beaches, the barrier islands, the clear Gulf waters, and the incredible wildlife.</p>
<p>But for me, that&#8217;s only part of the answer.</p>
<p>The real magic lies in the unexpected.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s found in the moments you could never plan, never schedule, and never guarantee.</p>
<p>A curious dolphin.</p>
<p>A quiet morning.</p>
<p>An ordinary anchor rope that unexpectedly became part of an unforgettable story.</p>
<p>Did the dolphin remember my boat from nearly a year earlier?</p>
<p>Did it simply enjoy playing with the anchor rode?</p>
<p>Or was I fortunate enough to witness one of those rare moments that nature offers without explanation?</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll probably never know.</p>
<p>And honestly&#8230;</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t need to.</p>
<p>Some experiences are more meaningful because they remain a mystery.</p>
<p>They remind us that no matter how many days we spend on the water, nature always has another surprise waiting just beyond the next island, around the next sandbar, or beneath the next wave.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s one of the reasons I continue exploring the waters of Southwest Florida.</p>
<p>Not because I expect every day to be extraordinary.</p>
<p>But because every new day on the water holds the possibility of becoming another story worth telling.</p>

<h3>Captain&#8217;s Note</h3>
<p>Every Captain&#8217;s Journey story reflects a real experience on the waters of Southwest Florida. Dolphins are wild animals, and every interaction is different. Florida Gulf Discovery always observes marine wildlife responsibly, allowing dolphins to choose whether they approach the boat or continue on their way. Respecting their natural behavior helps ensure future generations can enjoy these remarkable encounters just as we do today.</p>

<p>After an afternoon enjoying my e-foil at Boca Grande Sandbar, I anchored my boat in the calm, shallow waters of Gasparilla Sound. Within minutes, a curious bottlenose dolphin appeared beside the boat. Instead of simply passing by, it stayed nearby, swimming slowly around the anchor rode and returning several times to investigate it. Encounters like this cannot be planned—they are gifts from nature and reminders of why every day on Southwest Florida&#8217;s waters is unique.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Why I Started Captain Pavel&#8217;s Journal</h1>
<p>Every adventure has a story worth sharing. This journal is where I share them.</p>
<p><!-- /wp:heading --></p>
<p><!-- wp:paragraph -->Welcome aboard.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd"><strong>Dolphins Playing Around Our Boat at Boca Grande Sandbar</strong> is the first entry in <strong>Captain Pavel&#8217;s Journal</strong>. I chose this story because it captures exactly why I love spending time on the waters of Southwest Florida.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Some wildlife encounters simply cannot be planned. They happen naturally when you spend enough time exploring the Gulf Coast with patience and respect for nature.</p>
<figure id="attachment_11265" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-11265" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-Pavel 500 wp-image-11265" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-near-pontoon-boat-lemon-bay-englewood-500x281.jpg" alt="Wild bottlenose dolphin swimming near a pontoon boat in Lemon Bay, Englewood, Florida." width="500" height="281" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-near-pontoon-boat-lemon-bay-englewood-500x281.jpg 500w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-near-pontoon-boat-lemon-bay-englewood-300x169.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-near-pontoon-boat-lemon-bay-englewood-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-near-pontoon-boat-lemon-bay-englewood-768x432.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-near-pontoon-boat-lemon-bay-englewood-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-near-pontoon-boat-lemon-bay-englewood-125x70.jpg 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/dolphin-near-pontoon-boat-lemon-bay-englewood.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-11265" class="wp-caption-text">A curious dolphin surfaces while boats cruise through the calm waters of Lemon Bay near Englewood.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Useppa Island is one of the most fascinating and exclusive places in Southwest Florida. Every time I take guests around it, the trip becomes a blend of history, nature, and modern island living. Hidden in Pine Island Sound—just north of Captiva and west of Pine Island—Useppa is a private island with a story stretching back thousands of years. Today, it offers a unique mix of preserved history, wild beauty, and a small community living quietly in paradise.</p>

<p><!-- wp:paragraph -->Useppa Island has been home to people far longer than many visitors realize. Archaeological evidence shows that the <strong>Caloosa (Calusa) people</strong> lived here for centuries, using the island as a seasonal or permanent settlement. Shell middens, artifacts, and burial sites reveal a complex society that thrived on fishing, trade, and life along the estuary.</p>
<p><!-- /wp:paragraph --></p>
<p><!-- wp:paragraph -->In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Useppa became known as a private retreat for wealthy industrialists. It was owned and developed by <strong>Barron Collier</strong>, a Florida pioneer who contributed heavily to the development of Southwest Florida. Useppa soon gained a reputation as a quiet island escape for families, fishermen, and explorers.</p>

<p>This experience was inspired by several of my “4-Hour Sunset” trips. Since <strong>Cabbage Key</strong> is so close to <strong>Boca Grande Pass</strong>, it would be a shame not to visit this special place and share it with guests.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">
<p><mark class="has-inline-color has-red-color" style="background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">Now, let me describe this beautiful route.</mark></p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">
<p>Depending on the sunset time, we <strong>depart from Eldred’s Marina</strong> about 2-3 hours before sunset. Heading south, we pass under the <strong>Boca Grande Bridge</strong>, with the <strong>Boca Grande Sandbar</strong> lying just to the west. From there, we cross <strong>Gasparilla Sound</strong> toward <strong>Boca Grande Pass</strong>, where <strong>Pine Island Sound</strong> begins.</p>

<p>In Gasparilla Sound, we often encounter playful dolphins. After passing <strong>Three Sisters Island</strong>, we enter <strong>Boca Grande Island</strong> through its scenic cove. This stretch—about two miles long—offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the beauty of the island from the water.</p>

<p>Along the way, we pass well-known landmarks such as <strong>Boca Grande Bayou</strong>, <strong>Gasparilla Golf Club</strong>, <strong>The Outlet Restaurant</strong>, <strong>The Gasparilla Inn</strong>, <strong>The Pink Elephant</strong>, <strong>Eagle Grille &amp; Miller’s Dockside</strong>, and <strong>Whidden’s Marina</strong> (founded in 1926 and now listed for $17.5 million).</p>

<p data-start="380" data-end="703">During one of our tours in Southwest Florida, I noticed something unusual while catching snappers near Lemon Bay. In the picture, you can see snappers #1 and #3 from the bottom with some marks left on skin by a dolphin. These playful marine mammals were not hunting — they were simply <em data-start="655" data-end="664">playing</em> with the fish I caught and released!</p>
<p data-start="380" data-end="703">Be patient and let the dolphin take the line. Don&#8217;t pull too hard; let the dolphin pull with tension to avoid breaking the line. When it has pulled about 60-90 meters of line out, the dolphin will release the toy.</p>

<p><em><strong>Is it your dream to see wild dolphins up close?</strong></em></p>
<p>There’s something truly magical about spotting dolphins gliding beside your boat, leaping in the wake, or surfacing to greet you with a splash. Southwest Florida is one of the best regions in the country to see these playful marine mammals in their natural environment. With calm Gulf waters, scenic bays, and plenty of fish-rich estuaries, dolphins thrive here year-round.</p>
<p>As a local boat captain and nature guide, I’ve spent countless hours exploring these waters—and I’d like to share my favorite dolphin-viewing locations with you.</p>
<p>If you’re planning a private dolphin tour or simply looking for the best spots to experience nature up close, here are <strong>five of the top places in Southwest Florida to see dolphins from your boat.</strong></p>
<hr />
<h3>1. <strong>Lemon Bay &amp; Gasparilla Pass</strong></h3>
<p>Lemon Bay is one of the most reliable places to see dolphins up close. The calm, protected waters are full of fish, which attract pods of dolphins feeding near mangroves and sandy shoals. It’s not unusual to see them leaping just off the bow or riding your boat’s wake as you cruise between Englewood Beach and Gasparilla Pass. Its secluded nature makes it one of the most peaceful and natural dolphin habitats in the region. As you cruise along the coastline, you’ll often see pods of bottlenose dolphins playing, feeding, or surfacing right beside the boat.</p>
<figure id="attachment_9021" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9021" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-9021" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-300x169.jpg" alt="Lemon Bay West site housing, Dolphin Site" width="500" height="281" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-300x169.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-768x432.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-340x191.jpg 340w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-600x338.jpg 600w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site-125x70.jpg 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lemon-Bay-West-site-housing-Dolphin-Site.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-9021" class="wp-caption-text">Lemon Bay West site housing, Dolphin Site</figcaption></figure>
<p>The calm, shallow waters around Cayo Costa are perfect for spotting marine life. Dolphins here often travel close to shore, following schools of fish near the mangroves and grass flats. It’s an ideal location for both dolphin watching and shelling, making it a favorite stop on many private boat tours.</p>
<p>Dolphins often follow along the shoreline, especially on the Gulf side where the water is crystal clear. It’s common to see them jumping in the surf while you anchor nearby for a beach break.</p>
<hr />
<h3>2. <strong>Stump Pass &amp; Ski Alley</strong></h3>
<p data-start="136" data-end="390">If you’re looking for one of the most exciting and peaceful ways to see wild dolphins in Southwest Florida, join Captain Pavel for a scenic boat trip through <strong data-start="294" data-end="308">Stump Pass</strong> and <strong data-start="313" data-end="326">Ski Alley</strong> — two of the best dolphin-viewing areas along the Gulf Coast!</p>
<figure id="attachment_9026" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9026" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-9026" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-300x169.jpg" alt="Gulf of America &amp; Stump Pass at Ski Alley, Florida Gulf Discovery LLC" width="500" height="281" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-300x169.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-768x432.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-340x191.jpg 340w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-600x338.jpg 600w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC-125x70.jpg 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Gulf-of-America-Stump-Pass-Florida-Gulf-Discovery-LLC.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-9026" class="wp-caption-text">Gulf of America &amp; Stump Pass at Ski Alley, Florida Gulf Discovery LLC</figcaption></figure>
<p data-start="392" data-end="799">Leaving from Lemon Bay, the adventure begins as we head toward <strong data-start="455" data-end="469">Stump Pass</strong>, a beautiful natural waterway connecting the bay to the Gulf of Mexico. The calm, clear water here is a favorite playground for local dolphin pods. Often, you’ll see them swimming alongside the boat, surfacing just a few feet away. It’s an unforgettable sight — dolphins jumping, playing, and sometimes even racing in our wake!</p>
<p data-start="801" data-end="1067">Next, we cruise through <strong data-start="825" data-end="838">Ski Alley</strong>, a long, sheltered stretch of water that’s perfect for spotting more dolphins, manatees, and coastal birds. Surrounded by mangrove islands and white sandy shores, this area offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.</p>
<hr />
<h3>3. <strong>Boca Grande Pass</strong></h3>
<p>Known as one of the deepest natural inlets in Florida, <strong>Boca Grande Pass</strong> is famous for its incredible marine activity — and not just for tarpon fishing. The deep blue waters attract dolphins year-round, who chase baitfish stirred up by the strong tides.</p>
<figure id="attachment_9022" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9022" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-9022" src="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-300x169.jpg" alt="Boca Grande Pass and Lighthouse, Dolphins site" width="500" height="282" srcset="https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-300x169.jpg 300w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-768x432.jpg 768w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-1536x865.jpg 1536w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-340x191.jpg 340w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-600x338.jpg 600w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site-125x70.jpg 125w, https://floridagulfdiscovery.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Boca-Grande-Pass-and-Lighthouse-Dolphins-site.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-9022" class="wp-caption-text">Boca Grande Pass and Lighthouse, Dolphins site</figcaption></figure>
<p>At the southern tip of Gasparilla Island, this scenic pass is a hotspot for dolphin activity. The strong currents bring plenty of fish, drawing pods of dolphins that love to show off near passing boats. You may even spot them alongside tarpon fishermen during the summer season.</p>
<p>As you cruise through the Pass or along the Gasparilla Island shoreline, it’s common to see multiple pods of dolphins at once. They often leap in your wake, surf alongside the boat, or circle near the jetties. The backdrop of the Boca Grande lighthouse adds to the beauty of the experience, making it a must-see destination for dolphin lovers.</p>
<hr />
<h3>4. <strong>Cayo Costa Island</strong></h3>
<p>Just north of Captiva Island lies Cayo Costa — an untouched barrier island accessible only by boat. Its secluded nature makes it one of the most peaceful and natural dolphin habitats in the region. As you cruise along the coastline, you’ll often see pods of bottlenose dolphins playing, feeding, or surfacing right beside the boat.</p>

<h3><strong>5. Captiva &amp; Sanibel Islands</strong></h3>
<p>Between Pine Island, Captiva, and Sanibel lies the <strong>Pine Island Sound Aquatic Preserve</strong>, a pristine estuary filled with wildlife. These waters are home to dozens of resident dolphin pods that are incredibly social and often approach boats out of curiosity.</p>

<p>These barrier islands are legendary for shelling and dolphin watching. Cruise along the Intracoastal Waterway between Sanibel and Captiva or around Blind Pass — dolphins are almost guaranteed. They often swim right next to boats, delighting passengers with their friendly curiosity and acrobatics.</p>
<p>This area combines lush mangrove islands, seagrass meadows, and calm bays — the perfect environment for spotting dolphins, manatees, and even sea turtles. When the tide is right, you’ll see dolphins corralling fish into shallow areas and then launching out of the water in a spectacular feeding display.</p>
<p>A private tour through Pine Island Sound is truly a wildlife lover’s dream — peaceful, scenic, and full of surprises.</p>
