Sanibel may be the destination, but much of what makes this trip special happens along the way. Pine Island Sound, barrier islands, passes, beaches, wildlife and waterfront communities create a constantly changing coastal journey.
Your itinerary can emphasize exploration, time ashore, wildlife encounters or waterfront dining. Every trip is private and customized.
Important: Sanibel is a long-distance destination from Placida. This adventure is best suited to a customized full-day private boat trip, with the route and stops adjusted according to weather, water conditions and the time available.
Choose Your Tour Direction
From Placida, our boating area extends in two directions. A Sanibel adventure takes us South toward the barrier islands and Pine Island Sound, opening a long stretch of coastline for exploration.
Rather than following a fixed sightseeing schedule, we can shape the day around your priorities. Some guests prefer to cover more water and see several islands, while others choose fewer stops and spend more time ashore.
For Sanibel, we choose the Southbound route from Placida. What happens between departure and destination is what makes each trip different.
Departing Placida
All Florida Gulf Discovery LLC tours on this route begin at Eldred’s Marina in Placida, Florida. From the marina, we enter the protected waters around Gasparilla Sound and begin our journey South toward the islands.
Placida is an excellent starting point because the scenery begins almost immediately. Mangrove shorelines, channels, Gasparilla Island and the surrounding coastal waters provide a natural transition from the marina into the broader Southwest Florida boating environment.

Placida to Sanibel
The route toward Sanibel passes through one of the most varied boating corridors in Southwest Florida. Barrier islands, natural passes and the open reaches of Pine Island Sound create a landscape that continually changes as we move South.
Depending on the itinerary, we can travel through or explore waters associated with:
- Gasparilla Sound
- Boca Grande
- Cayo Costa
- Pine Island Sound
- North Captiva
- Captiva
- Redfish Pass
- Sanibel
These locations are possibilities rather than a checklist. The route can be adjusted for the amount of time available and for the places you most want to experience.
Beaches & Sandbars
Traveling by boat gives us access to shorelines that feel very different from arriving at a public beach by road. Along the barrier islands, we can look for a suitable place to anchor, step ashore, swim, walk the beach or simply spend some quiet time beside the Gulf.
Cayo Costa, North Captiva, Captiva and Sanibel each offer their own coastal character. Sandbars and shallow areas can provide additional stops when tides and water conditions are favorable.
Shelling can also be incorporated into the day. Gulf-facing beaches throughout this island chain receive shells carried by waves and currents, with each visit producing different conditions.
Instead of selecting a beach only by name, we can choose a stop based on what the water and shoreline look like when we arrive.
Dolphins & Wildlife
Pine Island Sound and the surrounding passes support an extensive coastal ecosystem. Dolphins are frequently encountered throughout these waters, sometimes appearing in open sound, along channels or near the passes between the islands.
The route also provides opportunities to observe manatees, ospreys, pelicans, herons, egrets, rays and other marine and coastal wildlife. Mangrove shorelines, seagrass areas and shallow bays provide important habitat throughout the region.
Wildlife is never staged or guaranteed. When something interesting appears, we can slow down, maintain a respectful distance and enjoy the encounter naturally.
Waterfront Dining
For a longer day on the water, a restaurant stop can become part of the itinerary. Arriving by boat adds another dimension to lunch or dinner and provides time to relax before continuing the trip.
Waterfront dining possibilities are available at several points along the island corridor. The best choice depends on your route, restaurant hours, dock availability and how you want to divide your time between cruising and stops ashore.
A dining stop can work especially well after a beach visit or later in the day before beginning our return journey North toward Placida.
Beach in the morning, island exploration during the day and dinner on the waterfront can all become part of one personalized boating experience.
