Moving to Florida’s West Coast changed my life in ways I never imagined. What began as a new chapter with my husband soon became a love story with nature itself — turquoise water, warm Gulf breezes, peaceful islands, and sunsets that seem to set the entire horizon on fire.
Every walk along the shore, every boat trip, and every quiet moment beside the water has left a mark on my heart. This is the story of discovering our new home and finding the place where the sun truly meets the sea.
Florida’s West Coast is more than a beautiful destination. It is a place where daily life follows the rhythm of the tides, dolphins may appear beside the boat, and every evening brings a sunset that feels completely new.
From Manasota Key and Lemon Bay to Boca Grande, Cayo Costa, North Captiva, and Longboat Key, each place has given us a different memory and another reason to love this remarkable coast.
1 Discovering My New Home on Florida’s West Coast
My first experience with Florida began when my husband and I decided to move here and start a new chapter together. We settled in the Gulf Cove area of Port Charlotte, and from the beginning, it felt like we had found our home.
The sunlight was brighter, the air felt softer, and the water was always nearby. Florida offered a sense of freedom that was difficult to explain until I experienced it for myself.
I quickly learned that living near Florida’s Gulf Coast means there is always somewhere new to explore. A quiet beach, a mangrove shoreline, a hidden island, or a winding waterway can turn an ordinary day into an unforgettable adventure.
2 Manasota Key, Lemon Bay and Stump Pass
Of course, one of the first places my husband showed me was Manasota Key, Lemon Bay, and Stump Pass. We walked along the Gulf shoreline from Chadwick Park at Englewood Beach toward Stump Pass before Hurricane Milton changed the area.
I still cannot fully describe how wonderful that first walk felt. The turquoise water shimmered beneath the bright sun, the breeze was warm and gentle, and I was there with the person I love and a dear friend we had not seen in a long time.
It was the end of March, but that did not stop me from wanting to swim. The water, the sunshine, and the freedom of the open beach were simply too inviting.
On our way back, we walked through Stump Pass Beach State Park. From there, the view opened toward Ski Alley and Lemon Bay — calm, spacious, and endlessly beautiful. This soon became one of our favorite areas along the Florida West Coast.
3 Exploring Florida’s West Coast by Boat
When we began traveling by boat, an entirely new chapter of discovery opened before us. Places that had once seemed distant became part of our life, and every trip revealed another side of Southwest Florida.
We explored Gasparilla Pass and Little Gasparilla Island, where we enjoyed time near the water while watching dolphins, pelicans, and ospreys. We traveled through Boca Grande Pass, with its strong currents, maritime history, and views of the historic lighthouse on Gasparilla Island.
Farther South, we discovered the wild shoreline of Cayo Costa, the tropical atmosphere of Cabbage Key, and the peaceful beaches of North Captiva. Each destination had its own character, yet all of them shared the natural beauty that makes Florida’s West Coast so special.
Traveling by boat allowed us to experience the coast from a completely different perspective. We could follow winding channels, pass mangrove islands, stop at quiet beaches, and watch the color of the water change beneath the sun.
Many of our favorite memories began without a strict plan. Sometimes a dolphin appeared beside us. Sometimes we found an empty stretch of beach. Sometimes the most memorable moment was simply sitting quietly and watching the horizon.
4 A Place Where the Heart Finds Peace
Every day here can feel like a small miracle — the kind that unfolds quietly in the rhythm of the waves, the call of coastal birds, and the golden glow of the setting sun.
Florida’s West Coast has taught me to slow down and notice the details. I have learned to listen to the sea, appreciate the changing sky, and find happiness in simple moments beside the water.
A sunset may last only a short time, but it can change the feeling of an entire day. The colors begin softly and then spread across the sky, reflecting on the Gulf until the sun disappears beyond the horizon.
This coast is more than a place where we live. It is where my heart found peace, where love and nature meet, and where the sun truly meets the sea.
