Some days on the Gulf of America turn into stories you’ll never forget — and this trip was one of them.
Before heading out, I analyzed the offshore weather in the ocean very carefully. The forecast looked perfect: calm seas, light winds, and clear skies and more important Wind Wave Height and Swell Wave Height and Period was vey good. It was one of those days when you have to go. So my wife, Olena, and I set out together, excited for a peaceful day in the Gulf of America.
This was a special trip for her — her first time going more than 50 miles offshore, and also the day she caught her first 25-inch grouper.
We started fishing in about 95 feet of water and move to 130 feet, and the action was steady from the beginning. We caught three grouper between 23 and 27 inches, and three times the line broke from something much stronger below. On top of that, we brought in over 20 snappers, turning the day into a fun and productive offshore session.
Then everything changed.
Suddenly, I felt something extremely powerful on the line — much heavier and slower than a normal fish. Olena grabbed her phone and started recording as the rod bent and the reel worked hard. Whatever it was, it wasn’t coming up easily.
For 45 minutes, I fought with this mysterious, massive weight. We just wanted to see what it was, and little by little, it rose through the deep water. Finally, the shape appeared…
An 11-foot nurse shark, calm, powerful, and absolutely incredible to see up close.
We didn’t target a shark; this was simply one of those unforgettable surprises the Gulf can deliver. After bringing it to the surface for a quick look and video, we released it safely and watched the shark swim away strong.
Between perfect weather, great fishing, Olena’s first big offshore experience, and an encounter with one of the Gulf’s gentle giants, this trip became a memory we will talk about for years.
