A burial at sea with cremated remains is the placement or scattering of a loved one's cremated remains in ocean waters. For many families, the open Gulf provides a peaceful setting that feels natural, personal and removed from the formality of a traditional cemetery service.

Families may choose a very simple ceremony or create a more structured memorial. There is no required format for the personal portion of the service.

You may include:

• Prayer or scripture
• Poetry or a favorite reading
• Meaningful music
• A moment of silence
• Readily biodegradable flowers or flower petals

The purpose is not to follow a preset program. It is to create a farewell appropriate for your family and the person you are remembering.

Burial at sea in ocean waters is regulated federally by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act.

For cremated human remains:

• The burial must take place at least 3 nautical miles from land
• There is no federal minimum water-depth requirement for cremated remains
• Flowers and wreaths must be readily decomposable in the marine environment
• Plastic flowers and other non-decomposable materials should not be placed in the water
• The burial at sea must be reported to the EPA within 30 days following the event

Florida Gulf Discovery records the offshore position so the scattering location can be documented. GPS coordinates may also provide your family with a permanent geographic reference to the memorial site.

This Florida Gulf Discovery service is designed for cremated human remains. Full-body burial at sea involves additional federal requirements and is not the service described on this page.

Most families first complete the cremation arrangements through their chosen funeral home or cremation provider. Once the cremated remains are available, the burial at sea charter can be scheduled.

Before the trip, your family should consider:

• How many family members or friends will attend
• Whether you would like flowers or flower petals
• Music you would like played
• Readings, prayer or personal remarks
• Who will release the ashes
• Whether you would like the GPS coordinates afterward

You do not need to create a complicated ceremony. Some families prefer only a few words and a quiet moment on the water. Others prepare music, readings and several personal tributes.

Captain Pavel handles the boating and offshore navigation so your family can concentrate on the memorial.

Captain responsibilities include:

• Safe navigation from Placida to the offshore memorial area

Safety takes priority. Offshore conditions can be very different from conditions inside Charlotte Harbor, Gasparilla Sound or near the marina.

Every family remembers a loved one differently. Your memorial can be quiet and informal, religious, spiritual or entirely personal.

You are welcome to bring:

• Meaningful recorded music
• Written tributes
• Scripture or poetry
• Photographs to hold during the ceremony
• Loose natural flowers or flower petals suitable for placement in the water

Family members may speak individually, share memories together or simply observe a period of silence. Captain Pavel can assist with the sequence of the ceremony if desired, but the personal memorial remains your family's moment.

Your family will meet Captain Pavel at Eldred's Marina in Placida. After boarding and a short safety briefing, we depart through the local waterways and continue offshore.

The travel portion of the trip gives everyone time to settle in before the ceremony. Once the vessel reaches an appropriate location beyond three nautical miles from land, Captain Pavel positions the boat and allows the family to begin.

There is time for music, personal remarks, prayer, flowers and the scattering of the cremated remains. There is no need to hurry this part of the trip.

After the ceremony, many families appreciate remaining quietly at the location for a few minutes. When conditions permit, the boat may make a slow final circle around the memorial area before beginning the return journey to Placida.

A burial at sea differs from many regular private boat trips because federal requirements require us to travel several miles offshore. Wind direction, wave height, thunderstorms and Gulf conditions therefore receive special attention.

A beautiful day near shore does not always mean the offshore waters will be comfortable. Captain Pavel reviews marine conditions before departure and may recommend adjusting the departure time when another part of the day provides better conditions.

This flexibility can be especially important for older passengers, young children or anyone who may be sensitive to motion offshore.

The memorial does not have to end immediately after the ashes are scattered. Some families prefer to remain together on the water for a little longer before returning to Placida.

This additional time can be used for conversation, sharing memories, listening to music or simply enjoying a quiet moment together after the ceremony.

Because the charter is private, the pace can be adjusted when weather, sea conditions and the overall trip schedule allow.

After the memorial ceremony, your family may choose to spend additional time together on the boat rather than returning directly to shore. Our boat has two tables with comfortable seating, providing a private place for family members to sit together, talk, share memories and reflect after the ceremony.

Florida Gulf Discovery provides water on board. Families are welcome to bring their own food, snacks and other beverages if they would like to have a simple meal or refreshments during the trip.

This gives your family the option to remain together in the privacy of the boat after the ceremony, without needing to immediately return to shore or visit a restaurant.

If your family would rather visit a waterfront restaurant before or after the memorial, that option can also be incorporated into the trip when practical. The charter is private and can be customized around your family's preferences, available time and weather conditions.
