Island Hopping Boat Tours in Southwest Florida with Florida Gulf Discovery LLC begin at Eldred’s Marina in Placida, where we can head North or South through some of the most interesting coastal waters, barrier islands, beaches, passes and sandbars in the region.
Head North toward Little Gasparilla Island, Stump Pass, Ski Alley and Manasota Key, or travel South through Gasparilla Sound toward Boca Grande, Cayo Costa, Cabbage Key, Useppa, Pine Island Sound, North Captiva and Captiva. The destination matters, but the journey between these places is often just as memorable.
Every trip is private and built around your interests. We can spend the day exploring islands, walking beaches, searching for shells, swimming at a sandbar, watching dolphins, stopping for waterfront dining, or adding a paddleboard or E-Foil adventure. You choose the kind of day you want, and we build the route around it.

Choose Your Tour Direction
From Placida, the first decision is simple: North or South. Each direction opens a different part of the coast, and the distance we travel depends on how much time you want to spend underway versus enjoying individual stops.
Some guests enjoy covering more coastline and seeing several locations. Others prefer two or three carefully chosen stops with more time for swimming, shelling, walking the beach or relaxing.
Departing Placida
Your day begins at Eldred’s Marina in Placida. From here, we have direct access to a remarkable variety of coastal environments within a relatively short distance.
After leaving the marina, the scenery begins to change — protected waterways give way to shallow flats, mangrove shorelines, open sounds, passes and Gulf beaches.
I watch the conditions as we travel. Wind, tide, current, water clarity and boat traffic can make one location more enjoyable than another on a particular day. Dolphins or other wildlife may also give us a reason to slow down along the way.
This is why the ride between destinations is not simply transportation. It is part of the experience.
Barrier Islands & Beaches
The barrier islands are the heart of this experience. Each has its own character, from developed waterfront communities to stretches of natural shoreline that feel far removed from mainland Florida.
Depending on distance and conditions, possible destinations include:
- Little Gasparilla Island — quiet Gulf beaches and an Old Florida atmosphere
- Gasparilla Island and Boca Grande — historic waterfront scenery, beaches and Boca Grande Pass
- Cayo Costa — natural shoreline, shelling, swimming and open Gulf beaches
- Cabbage Key — a classic island stop in Pine Island Sound
- Useppa Island — a historic private island available when landing permission and arrangements are in place
- North Captiva and Captiva — island communities, coastal passes and beaches farther South
Rather than trying to visit everything in one day, we can select destinations that fit comfortably together and leave enough time to enjoy them.
Sandbars, Shelling & Swimming
Eventually, it is time to step off the boat. A shallow sandbar, Gulf beach or protected shoreline gives everyone a chance to slow down and experience the coast from a different perspective.
We can stop for swimming, shelling, beach walking or relaxing in shallow water. Families often enjoy calmer areas where everyone can enter the water comfortably, while shell hunters may prefer an exposed Gulf shoreline.
Tides continually reshape these places, so the best stop is not necessarily the same every day. Wind, current, water clarity and boat traffic help determine where we anchor or go ashore.
Dolphins & Wildlife
Dolphins can appear almost anywhere along the way — in a pass, beside a channel, across an open sound or unexpectedly near the boat. These are natural encounters, so sightings are never guaranteed.
When we find dolphins, we can slow down and observe them while giving them appropriate space. Sometimes they remain nearby; other times the encounter lasts only a few moments.
Manatees may also appear in quieter waters, while osprey, pelicans, herons, egrets and other coastal birds are common throughout the region.
Watching wildlife in its natural surroundings adds an unpredictable element to every day on the coast.
Waterfront Dining
A waterfront lunch or dinner can become one of the stops during a longer day.
We might spend the morning at a beach, arrive by boat for a meal and continue afterward to another destination. Or dining can be saved until later in the afternoon before returning to Placida.
The best choice depends on where we are traveling, available dockage, restaurant hours and how much time you want to dedicate to the meal.
If exploring is the priority, we simply leave dining out and use that time for another beach, island or scenic stretch of coastline.
E-Foil & Paddleboard Adventures
A paddleboard or E-Foil adds an active option to a suitable beach, sandbar or shallow-water stop.
Paddleboard
Paddleboarding works especially well in calm water. Beginners can learn and practice close to the boat, while experienced paddlers can explore the surrounding shoreline or shallows.
E-Foil
For something more adventurous, try the E-Foil. New riders can learn the basic controls, balance and riding position with my assistance before practicing on their own. Experienced riders can head out for a recreational ride when conditions are suitable.
Please request either activity in advance so I can prepare the equipment and account for it when planning the day.
Create Your Island Hopping Trip
There is no single formula for the perfect day. A family might choose dolphins, swimming and a beach. A couple may prefer a quiet island and waterfront lunch. More adventurous guests might combine several destinations with paddleboarding or an E-Foil session.
Tell me what interests your group and how much time you want to spend on the water. From there, we can put together a realistic plan based on distance, weather, tides and conditions.
We can cover more coastline or spend more time at fewer places. There is no need to follow somebody else’s itinerary.
