These trips follow the protected waters behind the Gulf barrier islands. Instead of spending the entire day offshore, we can travel through bays, passes, tidal channels and sections of the Intracoastal Waterway where the shoreline stays close and the scenery continually changes.

Because the boat is reserved for your group, there is no fixed itinerary shared with unrelated passengers. We can build the day around sightseeing, wildlife, photography, island hopping, a beach or sandbar stop, waterfront dining, or simply discovering somewhere you have never been before.

2 Departing Placida

Every Florida Gulf Discovery tour departs from Eldred’s Marina in Placida, Florida. This is our starting point and a gateway to the protected waters surrounding Gasparilla Sound, Little Gasparilla Island and Boca Grande.

Within minutes of leaving the dock, the surroundings begin to change. Mangrove islands, tidal channels, shallow flats and barrier-island shorelines appear without requiring a long run from a distant harbor.

From the marina, we can head North toward Lemon Bay, Stump Pass and Manasota Key or South toward Boca Grande, Charlotte Harbor, Cayo Costa and Pine Island Sound.

3 North from Placida

Heading North leads into protected waters behind Little Gasparilla Island and Manasota Key. The journey can continue through Lemon Bay toward Stump Pass, Ski Alley and the Englewood area.

The character of the water changes continually. One stretch may follow the marked Intracoastal Waterway, while another passes natural shoreline, waterfront homes, shallow flats or small islands.

Depending on trip length, conditions and your interests, a North adventure may include areas around:

4 South from Placida

Heading South takes us through Gasparilla Sound toward Boca Grande and the entrance to Charlotte Harbor. Longer adventures can continue into some of the region’s most distinctive island waters.

This direction offers a combination of historic waterfront landmarks, broad sounds, narrow island channels, natural beaches and shallow coastal areas.

Depending on the itinerary, destinations may include:

5 Dolphins & Wildlife

These protected waterways create excellent opportunities to observe local wildlife in its natural environment. Because we move through several habitats during the day, no two outings are exactly alike.

We may encounter dolphins traveling through channels or playing around the boat, manatees resting in calmer areas, rays moving across shallow flats, and coastal birds hunting along the shoreline.

Wildlife commonly seen around these waters includes:

These are wild animals, so sightings can never be guaranteed. That unpredictability is part of the experience — you never know what may appear around the next bend.

6 Islands, Mangroves & Sandbars

One advantage of traveling by boat is access to places that look completely different from shore. Natural islands and narrow passages reveal landscapes that are easy to miss when exploring only by car.

Barrier islands protect the mainland and create calmer waters behind them. Mangroves divide these areas into channels and bays, while tides continually reshape beaches, passes and shallow sandy areas.

When conditions are right, we can stop to walk a shoreline, look for shells, swim, relax in shallow water or simply shut off the engines and enjoy the surroundings.

The objective is not to rush from one attraction to another. The waterways between the destinations are often just as interesting as the places where we stop.

7 Waterfront Dining Along the Route

A waterfront restaurant can be incorporated into many itineraries. Instead of making dining the destination of the entire day, we can combine lunch or dinner with sightseeing, wildlife and coastal discovery.

The restaurant choice depends on the direction of travel, available time, dock access and your preferences.

This flexibility works especially well on longer outings: explore first, arrive by boat for a meal, then continue the adventure rather than ending the day at the restaurant.
