1 Discover Bokeelia Sandbar with Captain Pavel

Bokeelia Sandbar is one of those places that demonstrates why exploring Southwest Florida by boat is so different from exploring it by road. From shore, much of this environment remains out of sight. From the water, the sandbar becomes part of a larger landscape of shallow flats, open sound and the northern shoreline of Pine Island.

The shape and appearance of the sandbar change with tides, wind and water movement. On some visits, broad sections of sand may be visible above the surface. At other times, much of the same area is covered by only a small depth of water.

That changing character is part of the attraction. There is no need for a complicated schedule. We can anchor, step into the shallows and spend time enjoying the surroundings before deciding where to explore next.

2 Wildlife Around the Sandbar

Wildlife is one of the reasons I continue exploring the waters around Bokeelia.

During one memorable visit, we encountered a group of approximately 6 - 8 manatees swimming near our boat. Watching so many of these large, peaceful animals moving through the shallow water was an experience I will not forget.

Dolphins also travel through the surrounding waterways. Sometimes they appear briefly in the distance; on other trips they may travel near the boat or surface unexpectedly while we are underway.

Above the water, ospreys, pelicans and other coastal birds are common sights. Ospreys frequently patrol the area while looking for fish and can often be seen circling above the water or watching from nearby perches.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. These are wild animals moving naturally through Pine Island Sound, and that unpredictability is exactly what makes each trip different.

3 White Sand & Shallow Water

The character of Bokeelia Sandbar changes continuously with the tide.

When water levels are lower, larger areas of sand may become exposed. As the tide rises, much of the same surface can disappear beneath shallow water. Wind and currents also help reshape natural sandbars over time.

For guests, this creates a comfortable place to step off the boat and enjoy the water rather than only viewing the landscape from aboard.

You can walk through the shallows, swim, relax, take photographs or look for shells and other natural coastal treasures along the sandy bottom.

Water shoes are a good idea because broken shells and other natural material can occasionally be sharp.

Sometimes one of the best moments of the entire trip is simply standing in shallow water with an uninterrupted view across Pine Island Sound.

4 Explore Bokeelia & Pine Island Sound

The sandbar is only one part of a much larger area worth exploring.

From Bokeelia, a private boat trip can continue through different sections of Pine Island Sound and the waters surrounding northern Pine Island, depending on tides, weather, water conditions and the time available.

Some of my favorite nearby areas include Bokeelia, Jug Creek, Shell Pass, Pineland and Calusa Island. Together they offer an interesting combination of open sound, narrow passages, mangrove shorelines, shallow flats and quiet coastal areas that many visitors never experience from land.

A customized trip can include:

5 Backwaters Around Bokeelia

One advantage of exploring northern Pine Island by boat is the ability to move beyond the more familiar destinations.

Around Bokeelia, the character of the water can change quickly. Open stretches of Pine Island Sound give way to mangrove shorelines, protected passages and quiet backwater areas.

We can explore around Jug Creek and Shell Pass, continue toward Calusa Island, or return to the more open waters of the sound.

These smaller waterways reveal another side of Southwest Florida — one that is easy to miss when traveling only by road.

For me, this kind of exploring is an important part of the trip. The destination matters, but sometimes what we discover between destinations becomes the most memorable part of the day.

6 Paddleboard Adventures

Bokeelia Sandbar can also be an excellent place to get off the boat and explore from a paddleboard when conditions are suitable.

The shallow water gives guests an opportunity to learn, practice or simply enjoy stand-up paddleboarding while experiencing the surrounding landscape at a slower pace.

From a paddleboard, you are close to the surface and can quietly explore sandy shallows while looking across the open waters of Pine Island Sound.

Beginners do not need to cover a long distance. The experience can be as simple as learning the basics near the boat and enjoying a short ride.

More experienced paddlers can spend additional time exploring when weather, current and water conditions allow.

7 E-Foil Adventures

For guests looking for something more active, an E-Foil may also become part of the experience when location and conditions are appropriate.

I ride E-Foil myself and can give guests an opportunity to learn, practice or enjoy a fun E-Foil ride during selected trips.

Because an E-Foil requires appropriate depth, open space and suitable water conditions, we choose the location carefully rather than assuming that every part of the sandbar is appropriate.

Combining a private boat trip with paddleboarding or E-Foil can turn a sightseeing day into a much more active Southwest Florida adventure.

8 Waterfront Dining & Customized Trips

Exploring does not have to end when we leave the sandbar.

Depending on your itinerary, we can combine time on the water with a stop at a waterfront restaurant around Pine Island or another destination along the route.

This is one of the advantages of a customized private trip. A family may prefer more swimming and paddleboarding, while another group may want to concentrate on wildlife, sightseeing, photography or lunch by the water.

We can adjust the day around your interests rather than trying to fit everyone into a predetermined schedule.

Weather, tides, currents and local water conditions remain part of every decision. Sometimes changing the order of our stops can make the experience considerably better.

What makes this area special is not a single attraction. It is the combination of sandbars, shallow water, mangrove shorelines, wildlife, narrow passages and the open expanse of Pine Island Sound.

One moment we may be crossing open water. A little later we may be watching a dolphin, exploring a quiet shoreline or standing in knee-deep water at the sandbar.

That variety is why I continue exploring these waters myself.
