Florida Gulf Discovery offers private dolphin watching tours through the beautiful coastal waters of Southwest Florida. Our tours provide guests with the opportunity to observe wild bottlenose dolphins in their natural environment while exploring some of the region’s most scenic waterways.
Unlike crowded tour boats, our private excursions are limited to six passengers, allowing every guest a front-row view of the wildlife and coastal scenery.
Dolphins are frequently spotted throughout Gasparilla Sound, Boca Grande Pass, Cayo Costa, Pine Island Sound, and the surrounding waters near Placida. Every trip offers a unique opportunity to experience these remarkable marine mammals in their natural habitat.
Discover Wild Dolphins in Their Natural Habitat

Southwest Florida is home to a healthy population of resident bottlenose dolphins. These intelligent and highly social animals can often be seen swimming alongside boats, hunting schools of fish, caring for their young, or playing in the calm waters around sandbars and barrier islands.
Our tours explore some of the best dolphin-watching areas in the region, including Boca Grande Pass, Gasparilla Sound, Cayo Costa, and Pine Island Sound. Along the way, guests may also encounter manatees, sea turtles, pelicans, ospreys, rays, and other coastal wildlife.
Because dolphins are wild animals, every encounter is different. Some sightings last only a few moments, while others become unforgettable experiences that stay with you forever.
An Unforgettable Dolphin Encounter at Boca Grande Sandbar

One of the most memorable dolphin encounters I have experienced occurred at the Boca Grande Sandbar while enjoying a beautiful afternoon on the water.
After spending several hours swimming, relaxing, and riding my e-foil in the shallow waters of Gasparilla Sound, I returned to my boat anchored near the sandbar. Not long afterward, a curious bottlenose dolphin appeared alongside the boat.
At first, the dolphin slowly circled around us, surfacing every few moments as if observing what we were doing. Then something unusual happened. The dolphin became fascinated with the boat’s anchor rode and began playfully interacting with it.
For an extended period, the dolphin remained near the boat, swimming beneath it, surfacing alongside it, and repeatedly returning to the anchor line. At times the dolphin was only inches away. It seemed completely relaxed, comfortable, and genuinely curious.

What made the encounter even more remarkable was that it felt familiar. I had been riding my e-foil nearby earlier that day, and the dolphin had been in the area. Watching the dolphin return and continue interacting around the boat made me wonder if it recognized my boat from previous visits to these waters.
I often refer to this dolphin as my “Gasparilla Sound Friend.” Whether it recognized me or was simply curious, the encounter demonstrated the intelligence and playful nature that make bottlenose dolphins so special.
As a captain who spends countless hours on the water, I have seen many dolphins throughout Southwest Florida. However, experiences like this remind me that every day on the water is different and every wildlife encounter has the potential to become a lasting memory.
The video and photographs from that day capture only part of the experience. Being just a few feet away from a wild dolphin, watching it interact naturally in its environment, is something that cannot be fully described with words alone.
Why Dolphins Thrive in Southwest Florida

The waters surrounding Boca Grande, Placida, Gasparilla Sound, and Cayo Costa provide ideal habitat for dolphins.
Warm Gulf waters, abundant fish populations, healthy seagrass beds, and protected estuaries create excellent feeding and nursery grounds throughout the year.
Dolphins in this region are commonly observed:

- Swimming alongside boats
- Hunting baitfish
- Surfing wakes
- Traveling in family groups
- Playing near sandbars
- Exploring shallow coastal waters
These behaviors make Southwest Florida one of the best places in the state to observe dolphins in the wild.
Family-Friendly Dolphin Tours

Dolphin watching is one of the most popular activities for families visiting Southwest Florida.
Children love the excitement of spotting dolphins, exploring islands, searching for shells, and learning about local wildlife. Private tours allow families to enjoy the experience at their own pace without sharing the boat with strangers.
Whether you are visiting the area for the first time or returning for another adventure, dolphin encounters often become the highlight of the trip.
Dolphin Photography Opportunities

Wild dolphins provide incredible photography opportunities throughout the year.
Guests frequently capture photographs of:
- Dolphins surfacing beside the boat
- Mother dolphins with calves
- Dolphins hunting fish
- Wildlife against Gulf Coast sunsets
- Playful interactions around sandbars and shallow waters
Our smaller vessel allows flexibility for photography while maintaining respectful distances from wildlife.
