2Departing Placida

All Florida Gulf Discovery Sanibel Island private boat tours depart from Eldred’s Marina in Placida, Florida.

Placida provides a natural starting point for a long-range run South through Southwest Florida’s barrier-island system. Soon after departure, the surroundings begin changing from marina and marked channels to open sounds, mangrove shorelines, shallow flats, islands, passes, and larger expanses of coastal water.

Instead of treating the run to Sanibel as transportation, we make the route part of the tour. Captain Pavel watches water color, channel markers, depth, tide, current, wind, and changing conditions while navigating. For interested guests, the trip is also an opportunity to see how Southwest Florida’s shallow coastal waters are read from the helm.

Depending on the itinerary and conditions, the route can reveal a succession of very different environments before Sanibel ever comes into view. This is one of the advantages of departing from Placida: the experience begins immediately rather than only after arriving at the destination.

3Placida to Sanibel Island

The route South toward Sanibel passes through one of the most distinctive boating landscapes on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Pine Island Sound lies between Pine Island and the barrier-island chain that includes Cayo Costa, North Captiva, Captiva, and Sanibel. From the boat, guests can see mangrove islands, seagrass flats, shallow banks, navigation channels, tidal passes, undeveloped shoreline, and open stretches of the Sound.

Continuing South brings the Captiva and Sanibel area into the trip. Blind Pass marks the narrow separation between Captiva and Sanibel and forms a tide-driven connection between the Gulf and the protected waters behind the islands. The bridge, beaches, current, and meeting of different water environments make the pass a recognizable geographical feature from the boat.

Farther along Sanibel’s protected side are the shallow waters around Wulfert Keys and Wulfert Flats, followed by mangrove and estuary habitat associated with the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge and Tarpon Bay.

There is no need to rush directly to one point on Sanibel. We can slow for wildlife, enjoy an interesting stretch of shoreline, photograph the islands, or add a stop when conditions make it worthwhile.

4Sanibel Beaches & Sandbars

Sanibel’s beaches are famous for shells, but their appearance from the water is equally distinctive. Because of the island’s East–West orientation, its long Gulf shoreline faces South and intercepts shells carried by Gulf currents.

From offshore, the coast unfolds as miles of beach, dunes, vegetation, residences, resorts, and comparatively low coastal development. The view is very different from traveling across the island by road.

When weather, tide, depth, and sea conditions allow, we may anchor near an appropriate beach or shallow area for swimming, relaxing, walking the shore, or looking for shells.

Sanibel’s shoreline is dynamic. Sandbars, depth, current, beach profiles, and safe approaches can change, so stops are selected according to actual conditions rather than a fixed itinerary.

5Dolphins & Wildlife

The area between Placida and Sanibel crosses several productive coastal habitats, making wildlife watching part of the entire day rather than something limited to one location.

We watch for dolphins in sounds, channels, passes, and open water. Manatees may appear in protected or quieter areas, particularly when seasonal conditions are favorable. Ospreys, pelicans, herons, egrets, and other coastal birds are common around mangrove islands, shallow flats, beaches, and estuaries.

Sanibel’s protected side adds another dimension. Tarpon Bay and the mangrove waters associated with the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge provide important habitat for marine life and birds. Around Wulfert Keys and the surrounding shallows, the landscape becomes especially characteristic of Pine Island Sound.

Depending on season and conditions, guests may also notice rays, schools of fish, tarpon activity, or other marine life beneath or near the surface.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Captain Pavel does not chase or crowd animals. When wildlife appears, we slow down when appropriate, maintain a responsible distance, and allow the encounter to develop naturally.

6Sanibel Lighthouse & Coastal Landmarks

Blind Pass

At Sanibel’s western end, Blind Pass separates Sanibel from Captiva. The bridge crosses a relatively narrow tidal connection between the Gulf and protected back-bay waters. Current can move strongly through the pass, making it both a scenic landmark and an excellent example of how tides shape Southwest Florida’s barrier islands.

Wulfert Keys & Wulfert Flats

Moving along the protected side of Sanibel brings the shallow waters around Wulfert Keys and Wulfert Flats into view. This is a quieter Pine Island Sound landscape of mangroves, flats, birds, and shallow water—a sharp contrast to Sanibel’s open Gulf shoreline.

Ding Darling Mangrove Shoreline & Tarpon Bay

The northern side of Sanibel includes extensive mangrove-estuary habitat associated with the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. From the water, the attraction is the natural shoreline itself: mangroves, shallow estuary, bird habitat, and the waters around Tarpon Bay.

Sanibel Gulf Shoreline

Rounding to the Gulf side reveals Sanibel’s long South-facing beach. From offshore, guests can appreciate the unusual shape and orientation of the island and see how different the exposed Gulf coast is from the protected waters on the other side.

Point Ybel & Sanibel Lighthouse

At Sanibel’s eastern end is Point Ybel and the historic Sanibel Lighthouse, first lit in 1884. Its skeletal tower is one of the island’s most recognizable maritime landmarks. From the boat, the lighthouse, beach, point, and surrounding water form a natural destination for sightseeing and photography.

San Carlos Bay & Sanibel Causeway

Around Point Ybel, the scenery changes again as the Gulf-side environment transitions toward San Carlos Bay. The Sanibel Causeway becomes a prominent feature across the bay and provides a completely different visual perspective of the island’s eastern end.

Taken together, these places reveal why Sanibel is particularly rewarding by boat. Within one island area, guests can experience a tidal pass, mangrove estuary, shallow flats, Gulf beach, historic lighthouse, open bay, and major causeway.

7Waterfront Dining

A waterfront meal can be incorporated into a longer Sanibel trip when docking, operating hours, route, and conditions make a stop practical.

Arriving by boat changes the character of lunch or dinner. The restaurant becomes another destination within the day rather than an interruption. After time ashore, we can continue sightseeing, wildlife watching, swimming, or cruising.

Gramma Dot’s at Sanibel Marina is one of Sanibel’s best-known marina dining locations. Depending on the itinerary, other boat-access dining options in the greater Sanibel, Captiva, and Pine Island Sound region may also fit the day better.

Because dockage, restaurant operations, and access can change, Captain Pavel plans dining stops around current information rather than promising a particular restaurant on every trip.

8Customize Your Private Tour

The strongest advantage of a Sanibel Island trip with Florida Gulf Discovery is flexibility. Every charter is private, so the day can be shaped around your group instead of a preset sightseeing schedule.

You may want a route focused on the geography of Sanibel and Captiva, with more time cruising through Pine Island Sound, Blind Pass, the protected mangrove side of Sanibel, Point Ybel, and San Carlos Bay.
