1Discover Boca Grande by Water

Boca Grande is the historic village and coastal community located on Gasparilla Island. Although many visitors explore the island by car or golf cart, the water reveals a completely different side of the destination.

From the boat, you can see how Gasparilla Island separates the Gulf from the protected waters of Gasparilla Sound and Charlotte Harbor. You can follow the shoreline, view waterfront homes and historic structures, pass the village harbor and continue toward Boca Grande Pass at the South end of the island.

2Relax at Boca Grande Sandbar

Boca Grande Sandbar is one of the closest and most enjoyable stops from our Placida departure location. Depending on tide, wind and water clarity, the shallow water can provide a beautiful place to anchor, swim, float and enjoy time away from the shoreline.

The appearance of the sandbar changes with natural conditions. At lower water levels, more sand may become visible. At higher water levels, the same area may appear as a broad stretch of clear, shallow water. These changes are part of what makes every visit different.

Families can enjoy an easy break on the water, couples can relax beside the boat, and photographers can capture the colors created by sand, sunlight and changing depths.

3Cruise Through Boca Grande Pass

Boca Grande Pass lies between the South end of Gasparilla Island and the North end of Cayo Costa. It forms an important natural connection between Charlotte Harbor and the open Gulf.

The pass is famous for its maritime history, dramatic water movement and connection to the region’s tarpon culture. It also played an important role in Boca Grande’s development as a deepwater port for phosphate shipping.

From the boat, guests can see the relationship between the pass, Port Boca Grande Lighthouse, the Gulf shoreline and Cayo Costa across the water.

Even viewing the pass from protected water provides an excellent perspective on the geography, history and natural forces that shaped Boca Grande.

4Discover Boca Grande’s Two Lighthouses

One island with two historic lights makes Boca Grande unusual. Each lighthouse has a different appearance, location and story.

Port Boca Grande Lighthouse

The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse stands at the South end of Gasparilla Island beside Boca Grande Pass. Built in 1890, it helped guide ships toward the entrance of Charlotte Harbor. Its low, house-like design is different from the tall lighthouse tower many visitors expect.

Today, the restored lighthouse is the centerpiece of Gasparilla Island State Park and includes a museum. From the water, its position beside the beach and pass makes it one of Boca Grande’s most recognizable views.

Farther North along the Gulf shoreline stands the tall metal Gasparilla Island Lighthouse, locally known as the Range Light. Its narrow skeletal tower creates a completely different silhouette.

Seeing both lights from the water helps visitors understand why their locations mattered. Together, they represent Boca Grande’s relationship with navigation, shipping and the Gulf.

5Visit Historic Whidden’s Marina

Historic Whidden’s Marina stands on the harbor side of Gasparilla Island at First Street East in Boca Grande. Founded by Sam Whidden in 1926, it became one of the island’s oldest and most distinctive waterfront establishments.

In its earlier years, Whidden’s was more than a marina. It was also known as a restaurant, dance hall, nightspot and community gathering place. Generations of boaters and fishing families passed through its docks.

While Boca Grande has changed considerably, Whidden’s has retained an Old Florida character that is increasingly difficult to find.

Dock access and operating conditions can change, so a close approach or stop is never assumed. Captain Pavel respects all marina instructions and private operations.

6Watch Dolphins and Wildlife

The waters around Boca Grande support a remarkable variety of coastal wildlife. Gasparilla Sound, Charlotte Harbor, Boca Grande Pass, mangrove shorelines and grass flats create connected habitats used by marine animals and birds.

Dolphins are frequently encountered. Sometimes they surface quietly in the distance. On other days, they may travel alongside the boat or become active near a channel or school of fish.

Guests may also see manatees, ospreys, pelicans, herons, egrets, rays and other native wildlife. Seasonal changes, water temperature, tides, food sources and weather influence where animals may appear.

A private sunset adventure may begin with a scenic cruise through Gasparilla Sound, include a visit near Boca Grande Sandbar or the lighthouse, and finish with an open view of the evening sky. The exact viewing location depends on clouds, wind, waves, boat traffic and the safest route home.

The experience does not end when the sun reaches the horizon. Some of the richest colors may appear during the afterglow, when the sky changes from gold and orange to pink, purple and deep blue.

Dolphins and coastal birds may still be active during the evening, although wildlife sightings remain unpredictable.
