An unexpected encounter near Lemon Bay revealed the curious and playful behavior of a wild dolphin—and left unusual marks on two released mangrove snappers.
1A Curious Moment on the Water
Every day on the water brings something new. During a personal fishing trip near Lemon Bay, I witnessed a moment I had never seen before: a wild dolphin became interested in mangrove snappers that had been caught and released.
In the photograph, the first and third fish from the bottom show visible marks on their skin. The dolphin appeared curious and playful, briefly making contact with the released fish before letting them go.
This was a spontaneous wildlife encounter—not something planned, encouraged, or repeated. It offered a rare look at the curiosity and intelligence of a dolphin living freely in the waters of Southwest Florida.
2Curious Minds of the Sea
Dolphins are intelligent, social, and highly aware of their surroundings. They investigate movement in the water and may approach boats, fish, floating vegetation, or other objects entirely on their own.
Scientists have documented dolphins carrying, nudging, and tossing objects. We cannot know exactly what this dolphin intended, but the behavior I observed looked more curious than predatory. Moments like this remind us how much remains to be learned about the wild animals sharing our coastal waters.
The best encounters happen naturally. We watch quietly, maintain a respectful distance, and allow every dolphin to choose its own direction.

At Florida Gulf Discovery LLC, wildlife encounters are based on observation and respect. We never feed, touch, chase, surround, or attempt to attract dolphins. Feeding or harassing wild marine mammals is illegal and can alter their natural behavior, increase the risk of boat strikes, and expose them to fishing-line entanglement.
If dolphins approach the boat, we remain calm and let them control the encounter. We avoid sudden turns, loud noises, and any action intended to make them react. This protects the animals while allowing guests to enjoy an authentic experience.
Whether we are exploring Lemon Bay, Gasparilla Pass, Boca Grande Sandbar, or Stump Pass, each sighting is different. Seeing dolphins wild and free is always the most meaningful part of the experience.
