After an afternoon enjoying my e-foil at Boca Grande Sandbar, I anchored my boat in the calm, shallow waters of Gasparilla Sound. Within minutes, a curious bottlenose dolphin appeared beside the boat. Instead of simply passing by, it stayed nearby, swimming slowly around the anchor rode and returning several times to investigate it. Encounters like this cannot be planned—they are gifts from nature and reminders of why every day on Southwest Florida’s waters is unique.

Why I Started Captain Pavel’s Journal

Every adventure has a story worth sharing. This journal is where I share them.

Welcome aboard.

Dolphins Playing Around Our Boat at Boca Grande Sandbar is the first entry in Captain Pavel’s Journal. I chose this story because it captures exactly why I love spending time on the waters of Southwest Florida.

Some wildlife encounters simply cannot be planned. They happen naturally when you spend enough time exploring the Gulf Coast with patience and respect for nature.

A curious dolphin surfaces while boats cruise through the calm waters of Lemon Bay near Englewood.

This remarkable encounter with a curious bottlenose dolphin reminds me that every trip is different. Every tide brings new discoveries, and every day on the water has a story worth sharing.

My name is Captain Pavel, owner and operator of Florida Gulf Discovery LLC, and I’d like to invite you to join me on a journey through the beautiful waters of Southwest Florida.

This journal is different from a typical travel blog.

An unforgettable wildlife encounter as a dolphin leaps from the water only a short distance from shore.

Every story you read here is based on real experiences from days spent on the water—guiding private boat tours, exploring hidden beaches, photographing wildlife, flying my drone over barrier islands, and discovering the remarkable history and natural beauty of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Nothing is written from behind a desk.

Every journal entry comes directly from my personal experiences as a licensed captain who spends hundreds of hours each year navigating the waters around Placida, Boca Grande, Gasparilla Sound, Cayo Costa, Pine Island Sound, Captiva, Sanibel, Estero Bay, and many other incredible destinations throughout Southwest Florida.

Some days I encounter playful dolphins swimming beside the boat.

Other days I discover newly formed sandbars, watch ospreys dive for fish, photograph manatees in crystal-clear water, or explore forgotten historical sites hidden among the barrier islands.

Every trip has its own story.

Every tide changes the landscape.

Every season reveals something new.

That is what makes Southwest Florida such an extraordinary place to explore.

My goal with Captain Pavel’s Journal is not only to share beautiful photographs and memorable adventures but also to provide a deeper understanding of the wildlife, coastal history, islands, waterways, and hidden places that make this region so special.

Whether you’re planning your first visit, returning for another vacation, or simply love the Florida Gulf Coast, I hope these journal entries inspire you to look beyond the well-known attractions and discover the quieter, more natural side of Southwest Florida.

Today’s journal begins with one of those unforgettable moments that remind me why I never tire of being on the water—a curious bottlenose dolphin that decided to spend part of its afternoon playing around my boat at Boca Grande Sandbar.

I hope you enjoy this first journal entry and that it inspires you to discover the natural beauty of Southwest Florida.

Thank you for reading the first entry in Captain Pavel’s Journal. I look forward to sharing many more adventures from the waters of Southwest Florida.
